Makes me wonder though, what are these wheel cleaners doing to the roads/driveways/ground etc. We now have a gravel driveway and I'm wondering what these cleaners, whether the acidic ones or the Bilt, Iron Out, Devils Blood etc do to driveways (mainly thinking about staining).

Whichever cleaner you use, my two tips are to clean your wheels frequently, especially in hot weather, when the deposits get baked on even harder, and to use a wheel wax (I use Sonax, a German brand) to provide a protective coating after cleaning the wheels: the wax really makes it easier to wash off any residue.

I would stay away from acidic ones as they destroy lacquer - Valet pro's bilberry concentrate works out at good value and is a decent product.

Also worth considering a 'fallout remover' product (the ones that smell awful and turn purple) valet pro do one called dragons breath, but all detail company's will do a version.

I’ve used bilberry but wasn’t at all impressed. It removed surface dirt but didn’t get rid of the more stubborn break deposits. Bilt Hamber is far more effective.

Yeah I agree to a point, you need something stronger if you have really baked on brake dust/grime but for maintenance it's pretty effective.

Another vote for Bilt-Hamber from me. Used it for 2 or 3 years on a Mercedes with a reputation for allow lacquer problems and it didn't do any damage at all.

I use Purple Rain by Autobrite, it goes a dark purple colour when it touches areas of metal contaminated dust. Blast it off with a pressure washer and the wheels look great.

I used this for the first time today on my V60 polestar. Worked really well, but what an unpleasant ( though vaguely familiar) smell !
