Help here pls
2004 XC70 D5 awd
Hello About a month ago i had my time belt done by the book all Volvo parts including the coolant. Today i have notice a small leak on the thermostat housing. Do i have to take all the coolant out (noooooooo) or can i get away clamping the tube from the radiator and replace the gasket on the housing? Many Thanks |

You can remove the themostat cover and top rad pipe without loosing much coolant.
Where on the housing is it leaking?

Probably wise to cover over the alternator as that doesn't appreciate too much water being poured into it directly, but don't be too keen to save a few £ and then run up a much bigger bill in the process....

I am not sure if the d5 and petrol 2.4t engines are the same.... but the seal between the screw on lid and housing is the thermostat seal.
Might I suggest getting a new themostat if going in.

Grab 1L of distilled water just in case. If the coolant level gets low it will show a message in the instrument panel.
Did you install a complete housing or just split it open and place the thermostat inside? Depends where exacting is leaking, at the seal with the engine block or at the seal that splits the housing. It's not hard to drain the coolant at the radiator peacock - just careful as it's fragile(tighten with fingers only). Once the coolant back in place it's important to follow the correct air burping procedure.

Its on the seal that splits the housing. I think its the original still....i think.
I was thinking on clamping the hose that comes out of the radiator replace the seal if there is one and put it back i think it will burp from the radiator reservoir and I can add some destil water? I really dont want to drain everything |

The coolant reservoir will drain - to empty it first undo the electric connector underneath, and push with a screwdriver the upper tiny hose, then lift it to pour it.
The radiator will not drain, but the block will leak some fluid. As for the housing, the power steering pumps needs be tossed without disconnecting it.

So if i clamp all the hoses i will not loose much coolant and it will much easier to burp it?
Thank You |

I only can find the gasket to the junction between the housing and the engine block. Not the top of the thermostat housing .
Like we see in here.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-V70...gAAMXQY8JRhk4m |
