Default Stylla Alloys and tyre confusion

hi all, i have a 2009 V50 with what i've always believed to be 17" Stylla alloys on.

Have recently been thinking of going to 18" (now having second thoughts because of other threads about potholes) and just had a look at the tyres on my car. They are 205/55R 16 which as far as i know is supposed to represent a 16" rim.

So now i am confused, can somebody put me straight please.

i suppose i could also get a tape out and measure them...

it sounds like you have "cordelia"

these are 16."

stylla look shockingly similar though but are an inch bigger.

judging from the "kink" at the end of the wheel this appears to be the former 16."

Thanks guys, mystery solved. So going to an 18" would be a pretty major step from a 16 given the ride is not exactly soft now...

Iv got 18" on mine with 40mm profile tyres. Very hard ride and lots of road noise to. Potholes, kerbs are a nightmare

I'd advise against 18's unless you really are prepared for a hard as rock ride. The 17's on mine are as hard as I can tolerate and I like a stiff and sporty drive.

I changed from Stylla wheels to Serapis and use the Stylla one for winter tyres. You can get the 17's quite cheaply on eBay but 18's often go for much more.

I have just changed from 16 to 18 and the comfort drive has not being compromised in any way. I do not have problems with road noise (on B roads) and this is making me wonder about the fuss about 18s. Another thing I have noticed is that I have more grip and I will test for breaking distance. Another thing I will look out for will be noise on the motorway. The car looks more handsome and aggressive and I am liking the 18 every day since I fited them on Saturday. After the motorway test, I will then decide what to do because I now have two sets of 18s (medea and medusa) and then the changed 16. One of the spare sets may be for winter and the other sold or keep to change from the present one when I get bored with them in future.

the ride will be slightly compromised however you put it because you have less profile side wall the smaller this is the less rubber and travel you have for comfort.

on new tyres no, but once they get older the road noise will probably be more lower profile in addition will create more of it, more grip tbh that will not be down to size, but width the wheels are wider therefore your tyres, so your comparing chalk and cheese.

you will struggle to find 18" winter tyres, and anyway narrower tyre (therefore wheel) is what you want so you go more over the top of bad weather than pushing it to the side.hence why small FWD cars that are light are perfect for that weather.

Thanks for the input guys. I've just come across a set of fox R4 17" alloys for sale look similar to the medusa. They're 5 stud but not sure if they're ok, listing says for a vauxhall. Any advice on these?
