S40 V40: - Cut my losses now?

Hi all,

I have a 2003 Volvo V40 2.0T with about 166k on the clock.

A few days ago the engine malfunction light came on so took it to Halfords this morning, they've just called and said that I'm better off taking it to a Volvo dealership as they don't want to touch it.

Codes are:

ECM-61
ECM- 91
ECM-25

The chap at Halfords said it's likely to be expensive to sort this and I should cut my losses now. Gutted as I only bought it 4 months ago for £1,200 and I really like it.

What are your thoughts, anyone else here with prior experience dealing with these codes?

First off, don't take any notice of what Halfrauds have told you. As you have found out they haven't a clue and suggest it needs reading by Volvo diagnostics.

What you need is the car read by VIDA - the Volvo diagnostics system. This will give you the precise info and point you to the exact issues. A Volvo dealer or an independent Volvo specialist can do that for you, or preferably someone who has VIDA near you may be able to read the codes for beer tokens. You could ask in the general forum if any member could help you out.

The other course of action is: if you are on Facebook, join the 'Volvo S40 V40 Classic 96-04' group. There are lots of knowledgeable folks on there who will undoubtedly help you out, either by reading the codes or advise on the codes Halfrauds have given you. Until you get the codes read by VIDA you are looking in the dark.

I would not trust Halfrauds to pump up a tyre without scewing up.

As the others have said, do not listen to a word anyone in Halfords says. They are not qualified and asking for their opinion would be like asking someone in Tesco how to fix your fridge.

Re a good place near you to get codes read..

ecm-61 is a code for the vvt reset valve, it may just be stuck
ecm-91 relates to dsa module
ecm-25 points to long term fuel trim, possibly related to the vvt code
find a member on here close to you with vida and see if they will read and interpret the codes properly for you.
