All prices in my area went up by around £20-30 over the past month. It’s a joke the dealers reckons it’ll take 1-1.5 hours to sanitise my car before it can be serviced, so instead of letting me wait the hour for the service they say they need 2-2.5 hours. Ridiculous.. just need a wipe around the steering, gear and door handles.

Just last month, M/B wanted £430 to service my wifes E220. 2nd service and 13000 miles on the clock. They also wanted a score to pick up/drop the car back. That was enough for me. £450 for an oil change???????. No thanks. Car has gone now.

My car goes in on monday. £250 for its 3rd year service which isn`t too bad considering it`s a dealer.

if i travel a bit further i can get it for £270, but time/motion not worth it.

Does anyone know if there is any room for negotiation on the price with the dealers, or if they charge for collecting?
These ancillary 'extras' like collection and delivery tend to vary with the dealer as does courtesy car provision. Mine collects and delivers for free (30 miles round trip) but charges for courtesy car (service not warranty) so there has got to be opportunity to negotiate such items.

The quote for your car service is reasonable, for a dealership as you say.

Another thing I noticed about Mercedes is the price they quote for servicing doesn't include the "additional items" that they specify need to be replaced. So for example, a service could cost you hundreds of pounds & you have to pay extra up on top of the ridiculous quote for the "additional items", like brake fluid replacement that costs about £80 extra . So you pay a high price for servicing & have to pay extra for "additional items" because they aren't included in the original price. Its daylight robbery!

Of course, you don't have to go ahead with replacement of the additional items. I feel if a car goes in for a major service, or a "D" service as Mercedes call it, I don't expect to pay £587** plus extra for "additional items". Its as if the £587 isn't dear enough! **Based on a quote I was given

I also found that MB York (JCT600) didn't give a stuff as far as customer service was concerned. All they seemed to be interested in was moving metal. Things went downhill when they took over the franchise from Rybrook Vehicles. Syntner in Stockton were a good dealer from what I saw of them (1 visit) before I got rid but just too far away.

Volvo pricing, to get back on topic, varies between dealers so in addition to the 'extras' being negotiable I imagine the service costs are also open to a haggle if you feel inclined.

I've just been quoted £550 for a 2 year service, but I'd do it yourself if you can...dealers I've come across so far have not given me confidence that they'd do it properly.

Glad you have such a strong duty of care towards the employees at your dealership...

As someone responsible for the H&S requirements to welcome guests to hotels, I would really hope they are doing a bit more than that.... They probably have additional requirements such as steering wheel covers, gloves etc, they probably are applying social distancing which may mean fewer people (and cars) in the garage at any one time....

The margin on servicing is what keeps these garages going (along with used car sales) so if the margin on servicing falls expect to see garages close and longer commutes to the dealer....

You cant have it all ways.

Unhappy Costs

My v60 is on for a service today (service plan)and I got a phone call off them saying my rear brake pads are just about worn out, they told me it will cost £433.20 to change the brake pads.so I told them to leave it and I will get it done elsewhere.then I got thinking rear brake pads surly the front discs would wear out .so when I go too pick car up I will ask this question ,why has the rear brake pads have worn out quicker than front discs.the crasy price of £433.20 to change rear brake pads is robbery without the violence .

Apparently it is due to the auto-handbrake being quite vigorous and coming on when you would just hold using the break pedal if you had a normal handbrake.

That said, I think that's a poor excuse given to me by my dealer when I had my rear pads changed at 25k /2 years in my V90CC. The dealer charged me £225 though which was £10 more than KwikFit so over £400 is robbery.

On SPA cars I'm fairly sure the brake pedal is used to hold the car initially but if the car remains stationary for more than 3 mins it engages the handbrake and releases the footbrake.
