Seat Belt Recall & others
I at last went to the dealer to get my seatbelt recall carried out and could see by the dasham footage they were under the bonnet and over the car and it was up on the ramps gettng a once-over that I didn't ask for but I guess I appreciate. I had started to get a screech from the rear of the car when applying the E.P.B. and was going to investigate myself, but no need now as the dealer found the issue for me. Cracked E.P.B. motor housing. Their estimate to fix, £320. Parts £148+vat and the rest labour. Ouch. Part available from China, £15. I got the part from a UK supplier for £32, looks the same as the Chinese one at a 100% mark-up. As for the quality, time will tell. Seems to be a common problem.
They were also saying I should replace a tyre for £138 with 2.3mm still on it and also new rear pads for £229. I declined.

I suppose that with Volvo's reputation for safety, and the dealer's nature instinct to run the business, we shouldn't grumble if they uncover faults we didn't know about and would rather not have. The proposed repairs can come with a pretty hefty price tag though.
Congrats on the DIY repair. Is there nothing that the Chinese don't make these days?

The part I ordered eventually arrived from Autodoc in Germany. Took weeks. Next time I will order direct from China as it will be half the price. I compared the old and new parts, both were identical in every way including all numbers on the body, except for the cogged spindle that inserts into the brake body. That did not not look the same but it worked fine!
I read somewhere that driving off with the EPB engaged can cause the motor body to crack, but I do not know if that is true. One thing I did notice was there is a build up or corrosion around the mating surface where water had ingressed which may be the reason why the body cracked? I had to file it all off to flatten the surface. It also came with new rubber seal and two cap head torx bolts. So far, so good.

EPB corrosion
Looking at the original photo, I can see the white alloy corrosion which has lifted the plastic motor assembly away from the caliper body that I think has caused the motor body to strain and crack. I will have to check the other side to make sure the same is not happening there. A bit of preventative maintenance on the way and give the brake pads a once over while I am at it before winter sets in. Don't you love fixing your car on the driveway in the dark in the middle of winter?
If you want to order the motor from Volvo, expect to pay about £140+vat, or if you want to order direct from China, Order here.

If this were the case then every time I went in for an M.O.T., the rolling-road brake test would destroy the E.P.B. motors. So it could be dismissed.

Yes, the EPB is designed to release when you pull away - thus making hill starts possible

....assuming you have your seatbelt on...otherwise, it won't release the EPB automatically and you drag the wheels along the road.

Or apply the footbrake first. Just so it knows you have done it.
I really dislike this feature. If I drive off without my seatbelt on. Sometimes the car refuses to release the brake unless I've pressed the footbrake first. But yes. The EPB can be used for hillstarts and does a good job at releasing then. Drives me nuts when I pull out of the garage and she drops down like a stubborn mule. Don't buy Chinese junk from fleabay. Just factor in autodocs 2 week wait. |
