Default Help! V70 Tdi - intermittent starting issue driving me nuts!

Dear all helpful peoples

My 98 manual V70 2.5 tdi is causing me some grief for the first time in its 215k miles...

-at times when key is turned the engine turns over and nothing happens
-at times it catches and stutters
-at times it starts fine

Once going its absolutely sweet as a nut. Facts:

-there are no fault codes showing
-there was some air in the system but 2 mechanics think they got it out
-fuel filter is properly seated and connected
-the last service was 1400 miles ago
-diesel pump belt is due a change
-I cant work out whether its temperature related. I think not - its not started cold and not started once warm at times.

Can you help?

Many thanks!

Immobiliser ... Mine does it periodically.. Take the key out of the ignition , wait a few seconds , put it back in and it normally goes.
Sometimes mine will go months without doing it and all of a sudden it might happen several times in a row.
Changing the antenna on the barrell sometimes cures it.. I choose to just live with it on mine.

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem to me.

If you have compression and fuel and everything is timed correct it should start.

The fact that it sometimes starts ok suggests timing and compression is good so the only other thing that it could be is a problem in fuel delivery.

That it sometimes starts and stutters again leads me to think your issue is fuel related.

Please disregard CPH. It won't be a intermittent fuel delivery issue. Or more specifically it will....caused by the immobiliser!!!

Mine did this 30000 miles ago, I cleaned the contacts and it's been fine since. If the pickups broken it costs £30.

It is the immobiliser as per rudi dudi says. Specifically the inductive pickup of the transponder from the key.

Undo the lower shroud unplug the plug to the pickup and clean with servisol and reconnect.

Thank you people!

Is there any way of disabling the immobiliser if this is likely to be an ongoing problem?

Cheers!

If it turns out not to be the antenna ring it may be the pump timing out.
If it's due a change as you said then it's probably worn and hence poor starting.

I have just had same issue. Got stuck in Asda the other night. As it was dark when I turned the engine over I could see the red dash alarm light flashing.
Anyways, it did start and I flew home as usual, runs beautifully. Did what you said about cleaning the antenna ring to see what happens. All seems OK so far.
Many thanks 👍👍
