Default Volvo 940 Cold engine drivability issues

Hello, this I my first post here, and I hope that you will be able to help me. I have a 1991 Volvo 940 Estate 2Ltr Auto with 174k on it.

My problem is; when the engine is cold, and you select Drive the car does not want rev past 2000 RPM (15ish mph). It starts misfiring very badly. The condition will ‘clear’ after a few minutes if you select Low 1 and hold it to the floor, it will then behave as if nothing happened and will happily cruise at 60+ mph in Drive.

This can happen occasionally when it is warm, but more often when cold.
Even when cold the car will rev up in Park or Neutral.
Occasionally the car will idle rough in park, then it will ‘clear’ itself and then will idle normally.
Always starts first time. Every time. Cold or Hot.
Yet, it can be idling perfectly fine, select Drive and the fun begins.

Since the problem first occurred I have:
Changed the fuel filter
Replaced all HT leads and Coil wire
Checked sparkplugs, the colour (white) would indicate lean condition
Cleaned throttle body
Checked and replaced all hoses that had a possible vacuum leak
Cleaned Air filter / ducting
Checked for vacuum leaks with Double-T around gaskets/injectors/hoses
Checked for 12 volts to coil, and spark at all leads.
Tried driving the car with charcoal canister disconnected, it made no difference.
Preformed compression test, all cylinders good

Car does not burn or leak any oil.
Does not leak any coolant
Transmission replaced at 165k, with one that only had 80k. It shifts normally.
Did have a 1-1-3 error code, that indicated a lean or rich mixture.

Sorry to be so long-winded but I want to give as much information as possible. I have read many similar posts on this site and have tired what other people have suggested, so as not to waste any ones time. I would be very appreciative for any help. Thank you in advance.

Long winded is good, too many people just put,"my volvo wont go! whats wrong?"

Have you considered the fuel pump.(underbody next to filter)

Pull the fuel line off the rail and have a pal crank the engine. Is there fuel squirting out?

if there isnt..

Using a multi meter test if there is current getting to fuel pump(ign on)

if there isnt....

it could be the fuel pump relay.

Post up the results

Update:

Turns out that the in tank fuel pump had failed.

If anyone else has had similar problems to me, I suggest checking the in tank pump. (It’s worth a try)

I did this by pulling its fuse out with the engine running, the car stayed running, the fuse DID NOT spark when I removed it.

Putting an ammeter across its terminals confirmed that the fuel pump was not drawing any power. I removed the pump, and tested it, just to confirm it was not working.
