Default Very Cold 940 Estate

Hi there

The heater on my UK 940 1995 manual estate is not working properly. I have checked the various hoses etc. and noticed that the two pipes that go through the bulkhead are only slightly warm, although the radiator is hot. I have been looking at the various threads regarding the non working of the heater in the 940 and I admit I am a bit confused. Some seem to indicate that the heater valve in on the LHS of the car behind the glove box and some behind the clutch cable which is on the RHS of the car. The fault might appear to be the heater valve or its control cable. However when the heater does at last work - anything over 1 hour - the control does work properly. I have also noticed since this problem started that that the engine will show signs of overheating when in traffic, although when running normally the gauge returns to normal.

Can someone please clarify exactly where the valve is and the best way of getting at it, checking it and if necessary replacing it. Or any other possible solutions.

Thanks

Colin

on cars without aircon it's loacted near the clutch cable, remove the large plastic cover under the steering column and you'll see it quite easily, I think it's cable operated so theck the cable is still connected to the valve and moves when you turn the heater temperature knob/slider.

If it's got aircon like i've got then it's in the engine bay between the firewall and the engine block and is vacume operated fo again make sure the vacume pipe is connected

Hi Colin,

Could be the thermostat that is stuck in the closed position? Just a thought.

Cheers,

Hi both

Thanks for the suggestions. I will now go and try and find the cable. At least I now know where to look!! I will probably change the thermostat just as a precaution. Wish me luck...........

Thanks

Colin

What excellent advice.......... I removed the panel and there it was..

And YES the valve has been weeping for some time, now its just too far gone to contain the coolant for much longer. Luckily the carpets are OK.

At the risk of asking a commercial question, what is the best place to obtain a replacement. I'm sure Volvo will supply one, but at a price.

Any tips for replacing it would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Colin

Wotcher. Best place for a new valve, if you are going to keep the car, is Volvo, however they will charge you the approximate national debt of the whole of Scandinavia for one; should you decide on non-o/e then either Eurocarparts or German, Swedish & French is the place to go. Even from either of these fine establishments it will cost in the region of £50-£55 delivered. As I've mentioned one or two times before, at least it wasn't the heater matrix, these come in at an eye watering £450 or thereabouts-CRUMBS!
All the best, Nick.
