The 185 d5 is the better engine but you have to have enough above 55mph trips for passive and active dpf regeneration
If the engine is run 50% of the mileage above 55miles/hour the dpf shouldnt be giving any problems Low mileage isnt a problem when run on the highway Last edited by 5cilinder; Oct 14th, 2012 at 12:48. |

E3 is a solid engine

E3 or E4 have the same pistons
IF E4 is failing more than E3 than it has to do with chiptunining or the use of those wonderfull 0w30 wateroils icm with biodiesel dillution |

Hi,
Been reading this thread. I've got a budget of upto 4k not sure which type to go for. I usually do around around 1200 miles a month, mixture of motorway and dual carriage ways. I prefer the looks of the face-lift model and like my toys in the car. I'm Based in the Manchester area, don't mind meetings up with potential owners for a chit chat. Regards Imy |

Is there much differnce in performance/ top speed I.e are the gear ratios different in a autobox in 163 and 185 bhp versions? |

D5 or D5?
Hi imy,
As others are said both engines are essentially the same with the main difference being the euro4 has a few more components in the throttle body and egr area's plus has the DPF. I would try driving both, the 185 has much better torque 400nM vs 340 on the 163 and pulls better up the rev range (not that you need to use it), 6 speed box on the euro4 is good if you spend a lot of time on motorways. If you go for a euro4, clean out the throttle body and avoid yourself any future 'possible' problems. The swirl throttle link is another minor problem area but its easily and cheaply fixed/improved in most cases..otherwise they are pretty bulletproof if you do the minimal service stuff needed, oh and stick with good quality synthetic oil. |

Now this is a very handy thread indeed.
I've had the later 185 XC70 for many years now without major problem. I'm now moving to Norway and I'm buying a 2004 163hp xc70 (I can't afford a later one what with Norwegian prices). I'd noticed someone mentioned you can re-map the 163. Does anyone have any details on that? I've used my father in laws 163 v70 and you can tell the difference in power between the 185 for sure. If not a remap, can you swap the ECU? What are puddle lights too? Cheers Matt |
