Default Renault gearbox?

Hi all been reading through various posts and it seems that the Renault gearbox gets a bit of bad press. What's bad about them and purely out of curiosity would my 04 s40 1.8 have Renault??

Yes it is a Renault sourced item. From the Clio/Kangoo/Laguna range. There are 2 types used by Renault, wide spread top mounting bolts and narrow type, both interchangeable with the corresponding chassis mount. Volvo use the wide version (stronger). I doubt the internals such as ratios are much different.

Some 2003-2004 1.8 S/V40 came with a Volvo box too. Where is the reverse located on your gearknob?

If under 5th gear-->Volvo gearbox
If left of 1st gear-->Renault gearbox

After having cars with the renault box and the volvo box, I much prefer the preciseness and smoothness which the volvo m56 box has.

I replaced the gear linkages on my renault box at least twice over 80k miles and it needed doing again when it was retired! The other known issue is that a nut inside the gear box comes loose and if I remeber right it can jump out of 5th gear, I never had a problem with this but there is a guide on the forum.

I thought it was only the 1.6 that had the Renault box? I have it and my only complaint is the notchy gear selection even after replacing the linkage bushes

All the versions except Turbo( and GDI ) had the renault box up until around 2000 when the volvo box started to be fitted the 1.6 carried on with the renault box . The Renault box in the volvos gives much less trouble than the Renault box in the Renaults !

Tell me about it CLAN: My Kangoo had 3 'boxes in it's life with me, mostly replaced due to weak casting and narrow mounting bolts at the top (too close together to spread the load from the support). I got rid of it before the 3rd box failed!

A lot of 2001-2002 1.8 have the M5P Renault box too. And even ViDA has it for them as an option. I would say that the later 2002 models came with the M56 Volvo box
