Not to be used as spring compressors, but a couple of decent quality ratchet straps will keep the springs under control as you drop them out.

Did this with what can only be described as questionably cheap straps, put a tidy top mount shaped dent in the garage door!

I have never used spring compressors on 120 or 140's even when the crossmember has been removed. Make sure the bottom wishbone bolt is still tight and that gives enough resistance for the spring not to shoot off
