Hi, I am new to this site and looking to buy a volvo xc70 Cross Country 2005 163bhp model. Does anyone know the kerbweight of this car as I am getting various from 1678kg to 1748kg. I have a feeling that the only way to be sure is to visit the local weighbridge.
Any help would be appreciated.

The best way to tell for certain is to ask to see the V5, the Kerb Weight is referred to as the "Mass In Service" on the second page. Whilst you can check online with various car databases, there are a few options can add weight (tow bars, rear child seats etc.) so individual cars can differ slightly - however not by as much as should change your choice of caravan.

It's likely to be the higher of those two figures, the AWD system adds 70+ Kg.

(To be really pedantic, as I understand it the "Mass In Service" is slightly higher than the kerb weight as it is calculated using a 90% fuel load, Kerb Weight is 75%).

Thanks for your reply Tannaton.
I will check the V5 as you suggest tomorrow when I go to look at the car. I am sure that the xc70 will be fine towing our caravan laden weight of 1600kg with the actual weight being closer to 1540kg to 1550kg.
My last resort would be the weighbridge,

It should be okay as the towing limit for that year is I think 1800 kg but you should double check. At 1600kg caravan weight you are above the 80% rule of thumb for caravanners but carefully loaded and operated with the XC70 you have a capable set up.

Just put deposit on car subject to taking to weighbridge tomorrow. The mass weight on the log book was 1776kg. With that in mind i would be towing 1550kg at 87% which I am ok with. With the car loaded I will be under 85%.

Its just "a good rule of thumb" - it's not the law, it's not enforceable.

Using a Volvo XC with all the safety features and AWD is probably worth another 5-10% anyway.

Weighed car with no fuel or driver or towbar and it was 1720kg. With fuel driver towbar and some payload I will be well in at around 80% towing at 1550kg.
Pick the car up on Thursday. Pick our Knaus 560 up in December.

1720kg sounds right. My old 2004 XC70 was 1800kg including me
