Default Volvo 240 1988 Estate Door Mirrors:~

Volvo 240 1988 Estate: ~ Manual Adjustment Door Mirrors.
The mirrors on this model have aluminum powder coated bodies with the mirror surrounds being plastic.
The coating after some time will begin to breakdown and separate from the fitting but can be quite easily repaired by removing the same and painting.
Most of the details are covered in the Haynes manual or other- for this model remove the control lever covers and trim (you can leave the door cards in place) two bolts & a clip once off the car it is better to strip down the mirrors further to enable all the powder coating to be properly removed.
This model hasn’t an access point for the glass under the plastic body so you either push the glass to get at the small clips (eight in total) as the plastic body has to be removed I found it better to use a thin knife blade and starting from the underside lever the front rim from the rear- this will give better access to the clips.
The main plastic body is then removed by taking out the six screws.
The front rim is fastened to the rear by two locating pins and rim cement- you will need to stick these two parts back together by whatever means you find suitable- I would recommend a bead of polyurethane adhesive as this can be cut through if they ever need to be taken apart.
Clean the remaining powder coating from the aluminum with various wire brushes.
Mask of all parts not to be painted- Foil is good for this as it can be shaped to fit.
Don’t forget to use Etch Primer for aluminum as ordinarily primer will not adhere long term, once fully dry you can then spray with satin black.
Trust it helps
Bob.

I rather suspect that the refinishing process would also work on the electric mirror cars, though the removal process is different.
