Whats that noise
My 1999 registered V40 has recently developed a whining noise when I turn it on, this is at first turn over to full ignition. I am an absolute novice with cars but wondered if I needed a new starter motor and more importantly am I causing more damage to continuing driving?

Difficult to diagnose with the limited info you have given us but sounds like it could be over run on the starter after the engine starts, are you holding the ignition key too long in the start position after the engine has started?

Not aware of holding the ignition key too long but to add to my problems when I started it this morning in addition to the whine I also had a noise under the bonnet on the passenger side that sounded like metal binding. It lasted only a few seconds and was only heard 2 out of the 3 times I used it today. Sorry I can't be more descriptive.

Hiya does the 'whine' begin after you've turned the key two clicks, as in when all the lights on the dashboard come on and then harder to hear once the engine has actually turned on? Or does it continue to make this noise noticeably throughout your journey?
Wondering if it may be your fuel pump 'priming' that you hear or maybe one of the car's belts needs looked at, auxiliary belts can start screaming sometimes. Any other info would be great as well as even a picture of the engine bay and an arrow telling us where it sounds like it's coming from. If you're worried about damaging it, take it to a garage you trust to look it over for you. If you're unsure who to trust just let us know what area you're in and I'm sure someone will point someone out to you. J |
