Exclamation Does a Cloned ECU need to be Reprogrammed to the Vehicle?

Any advice with this would be very much appreciated as I am close to coming to point of scrapping what is when it is running a decent car.

My wife broke down about 6 weeks ago now, long story short, multiple injector failure on our S40 2011 D3 - After trying lots of things which included bypassing the EGR and cleaning the CEM it was decided it must be the ECU.

ECU was tested by one company that said it was fine but the garage was still insistent that it must be the ECU, so it was sent to the ECU Doctor in Plymouth who also agreed it could only be the ECU. They cloned it completely onto a new ECU on a Sale or Return Basis, Cloned ECU was put in the car and it ran perfectly all afternoon. Next morning however went to start the car and nothing, would not even turn over, car reports Immobiliser fault and Brake Signal Communication Error error codes were C004087, V014000, V01000 - I should add the garage does not have Vida Dice.

So my question is does the ECU need to still be reprogrammed to the car by Volvo even if it is an exact copy/clone of the original?

Any Help would really be appreciated.

TIA

I would say no it does not.
The fact the car ran for a while, would suggest (to me at least) the Ecu is not the problem, unless there is something about the vehicle which is damaging the ecu?

I’d be making sure battery is 100% charged then having a leak test done to see if there’s something draining or indeed a very depleted battery.
My v50 it would take forever to start most times and I’d get the immob etc warnings up etc till battery had been charged (usually only after a few minutes it would go out) It was cured with new starter motor!
But it does sound regardless of branded vehicle like a fault within the primary power source.

No it doesnt, my ECU went through some mapping and was running for one day before going completly corrupted. Garage put a new ECU on and cloned the original to the new ECU and car was fine again.

I have had similar problems, defenitly need a garage that knows these cars / software to fix this.

I went from changing plugs to tracing to fuel pump etc which lead to no success. After a while the car just randomly fired up and has een fine ever since, I have no idea if it needs to adjust to anything but mine was similar to yours. After the new ECU and cloned data copied over the car ran for the first day and then failed to turn over after that for quite a while, car then randomly started after that and garage stilll has no idea how ... but car is fine still.

Thanks for the all the ideas.

The Cloned ECU has been returned and I am getting the original one back now as I did not want fork out an additional £300 on the clone for a car that was still not working. Unfortunately I only had a few days to do this, if I had kept it any longer they would have charged me.

I'm going to get the car home and have think about what to do next, ideally I could do with someone local with Vida/Dice.

I will check the battery and alternator and start to check for any obvious rubs in the Loom.
