Default Which Body Panels from a 940 fit a 740

Hi,
I have just bought a 740 from this site. Its needs a fair few body panel repairs, but have just spotted a 940 with decent panels but a blown engine.

Are the following interchangeable.
The 740 is a 1990 with the facelift headlights.
The 940 is a 1993, Both Estates.

Am looking to swap over.
Bonnet
Doors
Front Wings
Rear Boot Door interior plastics
Front Seats
Possibly the rear suspension.
Rear light cluster
Would be handy to keep the wheels as a spare set for Winters.

Any feedback greatfully accepted, and let me know if there is anything else useful from the 940 that I should keep for the 740.

Cheers

Andy

All the panels will fit, but to change anything forward of the A post you would need to change the whole front end. Basically making it look like a 940 / 760.

Cheers for the reply, NI Volvo Nut.

the front end is pretty good on the 740 so might leave that alone, but the rear doors, the rear boot and things like wheels, seats and some bits of trim should be an easy swap then ?

Will find out this week anyway, as I have just wont a 940 on Ebay for £102 to use as a Donor and should get it in the next few days.

I been googleing lots, but not really found definite answers on whats shared between the two ? Am I right in saying that there should be lots of shared small components, clips, relays etc etc that are worth stripping from the 940 and sticking in the garage for the 740 (Which I plan to keep for a long long time).

Cheers

Andy :-)

Almost everything is shared, 940's came with ABS as standard where as 740's didn't. So things like front hubs, they will fit, but will require so modifications to use the 940 caliper as well. Think the seat rails are slightly different, but adaptable to fit. Electrics and relays etc are interchangeable. Just the stuff that looks different is different. One thing I did notice, the door mirror, although look the same, there is a slight difference in that on the 7 the moulding runs under the mirror, on the 9 it stops at the mirror. Again, they will fit, but you need to swap other bits to make it fit.

Yes that's dead right a 940 electric mirror will fit. All you have to do is cut down the length of the silver (or black) 740 window wiper trim strip so it terminates inside the (extended) 940 mirror housing.

Isnt it easier to cut the mirror's aluminium shell? I have that problem, My 760 looks like a dog with its ears up at the moment. PO had fitted 940 mirrors with cut cables to the motors, donor 940 has wiring thankfully.

Unless you want to make a pig's ear of it, and have a gaping open edge at the bottom of the mirror faceplate ... no way.

A 940 mirror fits perfectly to a 740 door frame. The only difference on a 940 is the shorter length of the window wiper trim due to the larger size of the bottom edge of the mirror door faceplate. The end of a 940 wiper trim terminates inside the mirror faceplate though a molded cutout so that the end is hidden under the mirror faceplate.

The window wiper trim lifts off easily, and reducing the length of the wiper trim (an easy job with a fine hacksaw) makes a nice neat job of it once everything is back together with the end is hidden under the mirror faceplate. It ends up looking just like a 940, and only the purists would know the mirror was not a 740 standard fit.

As long as you have the right loom inside the door and similar on the mirror there no further issue.

Thanka everyone for the replies. :-)
Well the Donor 940 arrives tomorrow so I can then start sizing everything up and making a list of all the bits I need for the 740.
Expect lots more questions as I start moving things over ;-)
Cheers

Default Compatability

I have a 1986 Volvo 740GLT estate that needs a replacement driver's door. While I've read here that 940 panels are compatible, the Volvo
Breakers yard informs me that is not the case .Any further assurances would be appreciated before I place an order to a provider over 100 miles away.Has anyone replaced one ?

I do not actually know the answer. Yes, there are front end differences between 700 Series over the production years and also between later 700 and 900 Series front ends forwards of the A pillar (this is a generalisation!). However, as I can't imagine that the basic shell was changed and would suggest there is a strong possibility that you might be able to swap doors. You will have to do some homework!

Bob.
