How Slow is Slow??

Hi,

Had a 940 2.0 Turbo for a few years and suffered a self inflicted coolant catastrophe 🙄🙄

Need some wheels pretty sharpish, tried the dealer who I bought my Wentworth from as he usually has old Volvos, and he has a 1 owner early H 1991 2.0 non turbo on site, 153k but massive service history file.

Whilst it’s said to be more basic than my old one, and a manual, begets can’t be choosers…

Obviously going to look tomorrow if possible, and see what sort of ££ he’s looking for.

Aware that the non turbo will be slower, but appreciate any input from anyone who has driven both. Also, are clutches ok at 150k??

Manual will be slightly better than auto but the B200F is very slow. I had an auto which was absolutely mint ( ask Luke ) but I had to sell it as I just couldn't stand driving something that slow.

Apart from hills Steve, I think they’re fine. My 240 is the same year and auto, I’m not aware of being in anybody’s way but much like my 1.6 diesel V70, they have to be “ driven “!

The "slowness" will not really be noticeable in the speeds you can crank it up to, although there is 12MPH difference in maximum speed, but rather the time it takes to get there; 0-62 in 13 seconds as opposed to 9.6.

It really depends how you want to be driving a thirty year old car. The only things it really limits are rapid overtaking and nipping out into traffic. Both of these can be avoided with suitable roadcraft.

This said, my current favourite in my fleet is the 3.0 V90 Mk1 I bought during the pandemic because of its effortless power and comfort.

If you are planning on restoring your original Wentworth then maybe look for the same or similar model to buy as a temporary replacement because you will be able to swap parts between the two and keep the best stuff when you've finished.

Alternatively, buy a good 2.0 Turbo with base trim, transfer all the high-end goodies from the broken one and save yourself the hassle of repairing it.

Don't contemplate converting a non-turbo into a turbo. By all accounts it's a total pain to do.

It was atrocious!! When I took it to Lancaster to drop it off to Mark who came down on the train from Scotland it was a long slow drive. I drove my mates van as Mark brought a set of Aurigas for me, the van was slow enough but I couldn't see the 740 that my dad was driving in the mirror at all, I phoned him and he said it was struggling to get up the hill even with his foot to the floor, he said if he locked it in third it didn't go any faster it just made more noise 🤣the lack of torque is the killer, the turbo helps produce a lot of torque.

I remember the drive back up from Lancaster Luke. I started off at 1pm on October the first and arrived in Scotland sometime in December....... the following year

I found it took an age to get to 70 but could be held there with a bit of effort on the flat. It didn't like too much of a gradient though and it just felt under powered and very sluggish in general

As I said the manual will be slightly better than the horrible slush box fitted to mine. Must be the worst auto car I have ever driven !

You had also aged three years rather than one year in that time

I've driven three B200F equipped 7/900's and can hand on heart say I will never own one, there's not enough hours in the day to be driving something that slow.

A 740GL 2.3 does 30-70 mph in 10 seconds (auto: 12.6), can't find any figures for a 2.0 but expect at least 11-12 seconds for a manual. A stock B230FK does it in about 10 seconds, a 1.0 Skoda Citigo does it in about 11 seconds.

Meh, mines ok really but then it is a Kjet 'B200E' not an F. Pulls up hills on the motorway just fine, if a little noisy about it. (Even noisier right now lol).

There is no cat strangling mine. You might be lucky on an H to find it's still cat-free?
Fronm driving a variety of 700s as courtesy cars over the years, They definitely got slower the later they were!
