Default What is this called please.

Like many I've been trying to solve an erratic idle problem over some time. Each time I try something I think I've solved it, then after a while the syptoms return.

Today the prob' returned. Whilst trying again to solve it, I found this this part with a hole in it (see photos). Reckon its been that way since I had the car. I think the hole must be causing a massive air leak. It is covered with insulating foam which may have helped reduce the leak to a useable point, but since I've disturbed it.........

I phoned our local dealer & gave the part number 435252 & 'The computer said No' LOL.
So I've e-mailed them the piccies & am waiting the reply.
I assume it is part of the crankcase ventilation system, but it would help if someone could give me the parts correct name. Also could anyone confirm my thoughts re 'air-leak' via the broken part.
Cheers

Repair with duct tape and try the idling then. If it is crankcase ventilation, then you are pulling more air into the inlet manifold than the engine expects.
Clean your throttle body too...

Thanks Niloc.

Unfortunately, being ham fisted I busted a nipple to which one of the pipes attaches when I dismantled it, so think it is beyond Duct-Tape. The Volvo garage will have a new one for me tomorrow.
I'm pretty sure it is to do with crank-case ventilation, if not it Exhaust Gas Recirculation.
Cheers

It is definately part of the crankcase ventilation system. As a temporary fix block off the hose to the inlet manifold, this should cure the idling problem. Extend the crankcase hose into a plastic bottle or something to catch the oil.
Run as normal until you can source a spare gubbins ( I can't think of the correct name either )

Ta Pookie, I reckons it's a 'gubbins' too!
Got a bit on order, should be in tomorrow 51 Euros though.
Hope it solves the problem!

Right, got the part & fitted it. Now the car just will not run. Turns over, fires & dies. If I keep trying I can get it to run, but it's like a bags of bricks & the revs go from almost stalling to 2500 and back to almost stalling again and so on until it eventually stalls.

Plugs (Bosch WR7DC+) are clean & have only done about 2500 miles.

It has a new Coil & Ignition Module.

The dizzy cap & rotor look clean, but having checked my file, they've been there for 32K

HT Leads have done 11K.

Any suggestions, before I have to blow the moths from my wallet & have it trailered (Automatic) to a garage.
Cheers.

Unhappy Heeeelp!

Right I've put on a new dizzy cap & rotor. The car still refuses to run. Fires on the button every time, but runs only for about 1-2 secs before it dies?

I'm really struggling now.

Most probably with your last efforts to adjust the idling with the failed part, you strangled completely the air. Try to to give some air by turning left a few turns the idling adjusting screw (on the throttle module, near the butterfly, visible in the second image). Then you must readjust the idling speed.

Thanks Nano.
Just tried adjusting the screw, makes no difference, even if I open it fully. Still fires and dies.
Have put the screw back to the position it was at.

Have you tried what was suggested earlier - take off the part you just fitted and block off the pipe to the manifold.
