Default 2013 V40 D2 Clutch gone again after 12300 miles.

Hi all

Had my 2013 V40 since April 2014. Had 6000 miles on it a time of purchase.
October 2016 clutch went when the wife was driving home from work on a Friday evening. (Normally would have taken it to Volvo but everywhere was closed) as there was a Halfords close to where I lived at the time decided to have it recovered there and get it sorted ASAP thinking that they were reputable etc.
Had the full hit replaced (Clutch, Dual Mass Flywheel and slave cylinder) a cost of over £1100.00
Anyhow, 13 months and12300 miles later clutch has gone again.
Needless to say, it's going back to Halfords, they say they have a 24 month & 24.000-mile guarantee.
However, when speaking to a technician on the phone they said that there must be an underlying problem for it to have gone so soon.
Anyone any ideas what may cause this, or experience with Halfords guarantees.

Regards.

Si

I wouldn't want to use Halfords for this sort of thing. Quality of the parts is unlikely to be at Volvo standards. Having said that the manual V40s do seem to have problems with the clutch regardless!

Part quality should be OK - they do sell cheap parts, but also sell decent branded ones - and if a 24 month guarantee, then it must be decent to offer it. Not many places offer more than 12 months on a clutch.

Trouble is, when it comes to staff, that can be hit and miss.

I'm surprised the DMF and slave cylinder needed doing though. Seems a lot of work for something not that old. Usually DMF will last upto 80,000 miles plus.

I had an issue that, when hot, there was a rattle on start-up around the time the starter motor disengaged. Diagnosed as DMF+clutch and replaced at 3,000miles. The car's at 7,500miles and it's doing it again.

I hear this is not uncommon and Volvo is changing (improving?) the DMF every nine months or so, then when they get fed up they're blaming the problem on driving-style.

I'm already thinking at the next replacement I'll dump the car, because I'm not up for paying for new ones every Xmiles.

IMHO, the D2 gear ratios (first and second mainly) are wrong and place too much load on the DMF both on the up change and the downshift.

The slave cylinder and release bearing are a single unit and of minor costs versus the total job; so, yes, they tend to change them as kits.

Especially given how frail the V40 DMF seems to be.
