Sad end to dream
This is a sad end to a dream..........
But in many ways I have found it enlightening looking outside the cosy world of Volvo by reading the premium brands forum sites especially the JLR F-Pace & Velar sites. The No 1 difference was just how many members appeared to have pretty fundamental faults that JLR appeared unable to fix with many members starting posting about “Rejecting my xxxx”. Many of these faults are pretty typical IMHO of a large manufacturer progressing ahead on too many fronts all at the same time with quite often new technologies to them which as we all know always has initial teething issues....... it with JLR moving ahead so fast they are unable to allocate resources to look back.......hence no learning takes place to make the next generation gain from earlier problems. It was ironic that a key Velar forum member who owns several high value prestigious motors has just posted tonight the below to Arianne. Re: Broken promises - Arianne’s Velar OSF wheel noise still unfixed Post by VelarMan » Thu Mar 15, 2018 3:19 pm Oh my days - this is a sad day indeed! Sorry to hear this. Have a look at the Vovlo cars - they seem to be belting out some great stuff in the new XC90. 60 and now the XC40 too And other member posted Re: Broken promises - Arianne’s Velar OSF wheel noise still unfixed Post by Ludo » Thu Mar 15, 2018 3:27 pm sad day. but it's good that the head governs the heart for such matter... Good luck with your choice. +1 about the XC90. the latest edition is just a brilliant car. I had a chance to test drive one at montlery' circuit. the fully autoamted driving assistance works like a charm : brakes on its own when following a car, turn the steering wheel on its own, etc Then I look back at our Volvo XC60 forum and realise just how lucky we are in comparison to many others with all their car problems. Admittedly we did have the D4 VEA engine problem with the EGR issue which Volvo eventually resolved as a result of their new pioneering technology engine design.......but it was fixed. The above trials & tribulations from Arianne has now firmly convinced me that the next car to replace my 3 year old XC60 latter this year will be the 2nd generation XC60. 1. The latest version is now a complete step up from the previous model & really does take it into the Germanic levels, it even has air suspension...!! 2. It is being built on the already proven 2nd generation SPA platform from the XC90 and at the same factory having moved from Gent. 3. The 2nd build spec of the new XC60 will be MY19 that will be loaded on the configerator by the end of March I believe - which will again have ironed out any remaining niggles when the factory restarts production.

Sorry to read Arianne - but the right decision, the engineering is clearly flawed and the execution and quality poor.
In your shoes I would go out and buy something second hand that will see you through 6 months without losing too much money and perhaps something different to the SUV if you can manage for that time frame - have a bit of fun, try something different and lick your wounds whilst you decide what to do next long term... Good luck with it and stick around here, even if you dont choose a Volvo... |

So i then had to decide between one of the German brands or the new XC60. I am a Volvo fan - had 6 over the years (if you count a short term mk 1 XC60 company car..) so it was high on the list. In the end I went Audi for two reasons mainly... 1. Touchscreen - had one in a Golf GTi, hated it and the fact that everything in the XC60 was touchscreen or voice controlled counted against it. I know I could have got used to it - but the MMI in the Audi was just so easy (I'd had a recent A6 so knew how it worked) 2. The old chestnut of how many cylinders - for £50k I really wanted the aural satisfaction of something with more cylinders, it wont be long before we are all in electric cars so whilst I had the chance I wanted the experience of a larger cc and multi cylinder petrol... So I went for an SQ5, which ticked all the boxes for quick, discrete, well made, comfortable and 6 cylinder petrol... But the XC60 or XC40 could be next on the list when I want something a bit cheaper as I head to retirement! the fact is they are now real competitors to the big German brands - probably better in terms of style and image! |

Just to add insult to injury ... I spotted the front cover of this week's Autocar.
"Jaguar's XJ SUV" ... apparently a competitor for the Cayenne. Another rushed development with a few glitches to sort, I wonder.

Arianne, you might not have been happy with a fix anyway. The Discovery has had a rear axle vibration/noise issue for years and it is 'fixed' by attaching two weights the size of large toolboxes to it. I think they weigh about 6 cwt according to our local LR specialist.

Having been absent since we sold both our volvos, we saw our first XC60 new model in the wild yesterday so I came back to see what owners had said. Saw this thread was at the top of the forum and had a sense of dread opening it. Arianne, what terrible form you’ve experienced, hope you get a reliable, enjoyable drive soon.
In defence of JLR, we have absolutely loved our Range Rover Sport. We got in before the new dual touchscreen model came out (that would have been a no-no for me), but apart from a minor oil issue when the dealer overfilled it’s been a dream. Yes it’s a monster and polar ice caps melt every time we fire it up, but it’s just.....effortless. We are both very tempted by the new volvos, but for a total indulgence for a few years the RRS has been perfect. Agree with those saying never be a test mule, especially for JLR. Too many stories of rejections and niggles I’m afraid. |

Don't forget a dog causes more global warming than a large SUV, and few people think about the environment before getting one. (dog)

I made the switch to petrol 6 months ago, still got my S60 diesel for the worst the winter can throw at me otherwise I'm in a 21mpg environment friendly planet saver. EU 6 direct injection, no exhaust particle filter all those delicious PMs flowing out unrestricted. CO2? never heard of it...and the cherry on the cake road fund licence is cheaper than for my S60 diesel. Madness ! but if that's where the market is who am I to argue ? The South Korean's are not so happy about electric cars either https://www.reuters.com/article/us-h...siness+News%29 Toyota also reckon the internal combustion engine will be around until the middle of the century regardless what targets European governments are setting: https://www.drive.com.au/motor-news/...nd-2050-116103 I think Toyota might know a thing or two about hybrids having been in the game for a quarter of a century...

[QUOTE=Arianne;2380212]Dear All,
Guys, we all have our strengths and our weaknesses. One of my weaknesses is that, given more than one free space in the multi-story car park, I become terribly indecisive. Mrs A cries out from the seat next to me, "Just choose one of these slots and park the thing". You get my drift?' Wow what a painful journey Arianne. I have just come out of the other side of an awful purchase experience myself. Albeit one with only a single vehicle and with a significantly reduced financial outlay. In the end all I could console myself was that I had an inkling this was almost certainly going to happen! As per your post regarding your indecisiveness I am firmly in the same camp. For this reason I had until my recent XC60 purchase and for the last 10years only really driven one particular brand of vehicle. They served me well, were surefooted all year round, thoroughly reliable, were a safe place to be, yet would always put a great big smile on my face every time I drove one. I wasn't bothered it wasn't the latest must have and I certainly wasn't out to impress anybody and most wouldn't even know what it was if I showed you a pic today! What it did have for it were 6 cylinders, AWD yet room enough for a coffee table should I be inclined to move one about. It never saw a main dealer in my ownership (I had a really good specialist) and apart from consumables the only faults in 10years were a battery and a headlight bulb. But... It was getting old, the in car tech was pretty ancient when new, it had almost 100K miles under her belt and although there wasn't a spot of rust or sniff of burnt oil I hankered for a more up to date replacement. The trouble was I really new deep down that although I would be getting the added safety and latest tech elements was a modern replacement ever going to be as trouble free? And so it came to pass. Severn months of torture whilst Volvo stumbled around trying to diagnose quite a simple issue at first, then a catastrophic one of which when replaced under warranty they still managed to make even worse! I have lost complete faith in Volvo (the dealerships more than the actual vehicle) I will say at this point that Mrs L has had a fantastic experience with all of her last four Volvo's and this along with the fact the dealer is local made my decision to purchase another Volvo much easier. My tale has a happier ending in so far as although I have advertised it for sale I am seriously contemplating keeping the XC60 as all is well now and I am finally able to enjoy my purchase. Along with another vehicle purchase that has truly rekindled my love of driving again. I have driven my fair share of miles for business and pleasure over the last 34 years. The XC60 is a nice family car, I have always liked the five pot D5, its punchy even in D4 guise, its safe, it has a great driving position, has great seats and can accommodate our family and hounds in a fair amount of automotive luxury. Even in R Design spec it rides well. I can attest to the fact it does indeed tackle rutted and muddy farm tracks with relative ease and is not at all bad with winter boots on when the white stuff comes down heavy. What it doesn't have in my experience is the dealership back up one would expect from a manufacturer of this caliber. I looked at the Skoda 4x4 myself but a tall dog cage requirement put paid to that. I certainly wouldn't be bothered by the outdated snobbish behavior towards the brand that still sadly prevails and have a close friend that has had absolutely no issues with an Octavia and now a Karoq in over eight years of ownership I hope your third purchase is stress free and a far happier affair Last edited by losboz; Mar 30th, 2018 at 00:10. |
