Mmm that's just shown Volvo's are vunerable

Check out Car Crime: How Safe Are You? Tonight on ITV1.

Example car stolen without keys happened to be a Volvo.

Mmm Key's now going to live in the centre of the house

Hi
Just saw the program and the simple solution is to stop the keys transmitting when they are stationary in the house after a few minutes. i.e. hanging on a hook or on the side.
They then reactivate when they are picked up again and move.
Seems a simple solution and is it possible with a software update?

I was just reading about this relay theft in the news. I was under the impression that the car would not start without the key fob in its slot. Also, does the key fob not have to be left in the slot while you drive? I'm new to Volvo.

edit: Also to open the car you need to press the unlock button on the key fob. How is that done using relay theft?

No there is no movment sensor in the fob.. remember once they have started the car and driven away they will not be able to start it again when the engine stops as the keys are still back at home ...That's going to cause them a headache if they ever hope the car to drive again , doesn't stop them dismantling the car for spares though .

The car has to have a 'keyless' system for this type of theft. Many of the latest cars have this system - all that is required for the car to unlock is for you to walk up to the car with the key in your pocket ( or be within range of a thiefs amplifier).

If you have an 'old fashioned' remote ( as I do), that has to have a button pressed to unlock the car then you do not have a keyless system and do not need to worry about this kind of theft.

Mrs B's Nissan (and my previous Lexus) seems to be a bit of each, in that it has a button on the remote, but also, when within range, press a button on the door handle to unlock, without touching the key. Safe or not? Any ideas?

I think on Nissan's it's keyless entry you don't have to push the button just pull the handle, at least it is on Dad's Juke.

The button enables the car to be locked & unlocked at a greater range, my XC60 is the same.

Not the same as a Juke, the Note's keyless start, but not keyless entry. You can either use the button on the fob, or push the button on either front door or the boot to unlock.

However the key must still transmit the signal all of the time so technically it's keyless entry.

The issue is the Thief can boost the signal from the key left in the house (if close enough) to make the car think the key is nearby.

I think a point has been missed about these thefts ,after the thieves have gained access to your car ,your key is redundant as they reprogram their own key ,all done with a gizmo from Romania ,they can if they wish break a window to get in ,it is usually preferable to use the original key to open up ,reprogram and away.
A friend had her Audi nicked ,quickly found out where it had been dumped but could not move it because keys no longer worked.
