Unhappy 440 Soaring temp .... more

Hi all,

I thought the problem with my 440 had gone away, 'till I got stuck in a severe traffic jam in Dublin last week, and was in it for about 2 hours. This happened to be an extremely hot day, and I'd done a clean run of about 10km. at 120 k.p.h. steady, before running into this chronic jam.

The temp. had been normal all along, but all of a sudden ( I mean, within a few minutes ) of meeting static traffic we were right up to red zone, and on comes the temp. light. I felt like such a tit pulling into the grass median, but seemed like the best option. After about 10 minutes, I put the fan on 4 (max) and turned the heater up full, and re-joined the carpark.

While this helped, the constant 'stop start' nonsense in the traffic drove the temp. right up again, so I made my way accross the lanes to a proper stop, and stayed there for about 20 minutes ( felt like a tit again! ) Got on alright after this, 'cause whatever was causing the tailback obviously got sorted and things began to ( sort of ) move.

I then drove about 200k.m. to the North and 200 k.m. back, and she was like a dream. Coolant level seems to remain normal. A faulty thermostat folks? If so, hard to replace? Easy to locate?

Help, as always, much appreciated!

Thanks.

Anthony.

Hi,

Does your fan turn on when in traffic?
Could be either the fan, or one of its components or as you suggest a dodgy thermostat.

Not completely ofay with 400 series but one of the above will be the answer.
May be worth checking the connection to the thermostat to make sure it is Ok, remove and refit the cable a few times and test.
Also make sure no fuses are blown (re the fan)..

Des. . .

Lightbulb Fan issue

Hi Des,

Thanks a lot for your help. As you mention it, no, there's no 'whoosh' of the fan coming on at all.

Nice one, cheers.
