If the coolant looks clear, chances are it's the wrong mix. too much water would give rise to an increase in it's consumption and the temperature readings ( lower boiling point, etc, etc.) Like you say, hot weather, etc..

HOWEVER, you do have a misfire, so it is possible that there is a problem with the head gasket.

I dont think theyre trying it on so much as trying to prevent a problem getting worse or eliminating possible causes along the way.

Update again:

Picked car up and got SOME good news. It's NOT the head gasket, and inlet manifold is also fine (which was my other major concern). However, the problem still remains unsolved, for the time being at least.

The error code thrown up by the computer is 3.1.3 Curiously, this code isn't on this website: http://www.troublecodes.net/Volvo/

But the garage showed me an error code book, where 3.1.3 code was something to do with a canister that should resend unused fumes back into the engine (?).

(Edit: 3-1-3 Carbonfilter valve?)

Apparently this is found underneath the wing, and involves removing a wheel arch. The error log has been reset, and the mechanic says bring the car back again next week after it's been run a little. Right now the misfire is not there, but he's confident it will return (as am I, unfortunately) and wants to make sure that is actually the problem before I start spending. So they were reasonable enough, and I suppose my cynicism got the better of me on this occasion.

Thanks for everyone's help, and I'll update again when I've been back, probably late next week.

Keep us posted and let us know when you solve it.
As an aside, where can i obtain the gadget to plug into this? How much (roughly) would you expect to pay?

Never did get a conclusion on this problem. Garage had car a few days, and just couldn't find the fault. The misfire is back to what it originally was. It had got worse, and it turns out this was my fault! When I changed the distributor cap + rotor arm I had not seated the rotor arm properly, and it had worked loose, wrecking the new cap. Ooops! (This was the first time I had replaced a cap + arm).
