This^^

My wife (with much better hearing than I have) strongly objects to the road noise level in my Volvo, her Sportage is so much quieter. I think it's a combination of the R-Design suspension and the low profile tyres?

Fortunately I like to listen to loud music when driving on my own.

Makes no difference that I can see (I have laminated windows) most noise seems to be coming through the chassis. Bare V60 cc that I have on loan in comparison to my fully loaded xc90 is like a meditation garden. Also on 20in alloys but road noise insulation is night and day.

I'm planing to apply these materials to wheel arches first. They say that it will decrease road noise between 1.5db - 2.5 db. It is very very good.

I'm not planing to change my car in near future. Because Volvo s90 D5 inscription plus + some options (without bowers and wilkins) is 100.000$ here in Turkey and if you want to trade your ex Volvo s90, you have to pay avg 25.000$ more on it.

I will evaluate the situation when Volvo s90 mild-hybrid come to the market but it is just a hope for now

I actually went little crazy and did this myself. I have MY18 V90 and B&W sound system. I really hated road noise from back and B pillars so I did full noise insulation of trunk space + all doors + B pillars. Today I'm planning rear wheel arches as final solution. I can say difference is huge already with all but wheel arches done. But not as you would thought. I still hear noise from rear more than front, but otherwise car got realllly quiet. Driving excessive speeds over 130kph make 1:10 difference, while slowly 40-70kph not that much but its still noticable. Project took a lot of time, about 2H per door, and 6-8h for trunk. I got all apart and together without big hussle except for the window regulator module and cables. There is some special plastic that holds that to the lock and I broke one clip on 3 out of 4 doors. Very annoying. Luckly for me, there is no noise or any sort of issues with that, yet. But other than that, impressive car to take apart and back together. Is project worth it? If you have time yes. If you give it to someone else, well I would pay a lot for noise insulation as it means A lot to me. but I got no one doing that in my country.

So drawing the line, it was worth it for me.

Regarding putting music up, usually I can hear noise through music as my ears are really good at hearing noises, specially with 3700€ sound system which sounds perfect when not driving....

P.S.: B pillars are quiet easy and take only 20min. What I did there is remove blowing vent, pulled b pillar away, removed bottom and stucked sound absorbing foam (without glue) inside hole just so it gets down to safety belt motor (the one for emergency breaking). Basically it prevents noise from rising above inside B pillar. I had same issue in Superb where I added even more of foam and that modification alone made car quiet by huge margin. Probably more than insulating doors!

I had a 2017 D4, the new 2020 T5 is quieter. I recently drove a brand new 5 series and to be fair, I didn’t find it any quieter. The road surfaces in the UK are crap so they don’t help. On a smooth surface the S90 is very very quiet!

i have to confess that my V90 is already the quietest car I've ever owned.

Having said that all my most recent other cars have been Vauxhall's so my comparisons might not fair with what might be considered higher end models!
