Default Unhealthy gearbox, faulty clutch or what ?

Hi all happy new year,

I had my clutch replaced last year with the throw out bearing too. While I was at it I had the gearbox oil changed, which has now covered 13k miles on it.

My problem is when I have changed into gear I hear this grinding sound in each gears 1-3 when I accelerate. The sound goes after hitting the 2500 rph point like something may be loose.

At first I thought it was my heat shield as it was missing a bolt, which I have now replaced, but the sound is still there. I did remember one early morning after driving 100miles and left the engine running as I was picking my mother up to drive her to London airport that the gearbox/clutch end of the car was make scrape/grinding noises that could be heard whilst standing on that side!

I thought this may be due to that my Mobil 1 was well gone it's sell buy date. Changing it would cure this, unfortunately not.

So my question do I have a possible problem with my manual gearbox, my newest clutch or do I have something else?

Worried,
Mark

Default RE: Unhealthy gearbox, faulty clutch or what ?

This is just a thought. My 940 made similar noises. The thrust bearing is self centering i.e. the mating face slides in relation to the ball race to iron out any misalignment. The thrust was taken off ,centred and it solved it. If the problem only started after oil/clutch change then you may be right in thinking that its in this area. Cars however have a nasty habit of transmitting noises from other areas. As the gearbox was removed is there anything else that may have been disturbed ? Cheers Nige

I have the same problem on my 850 GLT-96, 160000kms.

I had it at the dealer to have the chief tech listen to it. To my horror, this sounds was considered "normal". Not even my Golf with twice the mileage sounds anywhere like it!
Apparently it is the vibrations from the driveshaft that produce the sound and due to a cheaper flywheel design (all metal) it is transposed to the rest of the car.
There is a fix for about£1000, which is a more advanced wafer design flywheel which absorbs the vibrations. £1000 is without the work hours of course.... :(

Second hand value of the car kind of deteriorates when it sounds like this. The sound does not indicate a problem though and was said to be harmless.
