Many thanks for your comments.
First of all I have driven the D5 as we have one at work so I know it well enough. I drive the 940 LPT and find it fast enough for daily use and once you get it upto some 3000rpm it shifts nicely. (these lower bhp engines, as in the V70 has better low down torque hence can be driven a bit lazier).
Anyway back to V70, the wifey wants a/c and all that and we have had 940's for some time so its time to downsize (the boot) a wee bit!
I have a 05/54 plate 2.4D SE (ie the 163bhp D5) in the pipeline with some 80K-ish on the clock at a very good price throught a dealer contact but is running late as the owners replacement car is running late (owner going for a Honda CRV , not sure what that is telling me). Anyway as its now late by some 6 weeks I am getting twitchy and have scoured the usual sites for possible alternatives and saw a 03 D5 SE 80K (indy) and a dealer 53plate 140bhp SE with 30K (now sold by the way) for under £11K. Though I'd ask you to see what you think. Personally I probably hold off a bit longer for the 05/54 D5 (ie also the updated shape) assuming that motorway miles won't have hurt it too much in just over 2 years. I am not off to France until end of June so there is another month to go.

the CRV bit is probably a cheaper way to get height :->
I have a S60 D5 2005 plate which I love but my mum hates it because its low and what not. She went for the Honda CRV despite a good deal on the S60 (or any saloon Volvo) because she wanted the height and a mid-4x4 yet keep all the extra things like heated seats and what not.

XC90 is out of the budget and the CRV is actually a really nice car to drive

Cool

The CRV is a great car and the latest model looks good too. I was more thinking why not go for another V70 (or another Volvo) ie has there been any issues with reliability to persuade him (or her..) to change brand. IF I'd do 40K a year I'd make sure that I would have something comfy and the V70 fits the bill, getting a tall SUV/4x4 would not be my cup of tea. I will let you know how I get on if/when I get the car.
Thanks again for all your comments.
