Maybe the R stories I've read are scaremongery, but I have read a lot of them and the knackered one with a fair size bill for its owner being in the garage at the same time as mine, was statistically improbable given how very rare they are. In the same way that now when I drop my Mercedes at the garage, I'm quite surprised NOT to find one like mine already there. Because I now know it's a money pit pig. |

Have to agree with Kellypaws, if you want something faster than a T5 then you are setting the bar very high !!. I have a 07 plate S60 2.5t SE and it's quick, just ask the guy in the focus St 225 who tried to outdrag me! If you want to go quicker than a T5 may I suggest a Audi RS6 Avant or a Yamaha R1.

The T5 (and the R for that matter) are never going to be 0 to 60mph dragsters, are not designed to be such, and should not be driven in such an un-volvo manner! The strength of these cars is their ability to eat up queues of slower traffic with phenomenal mid-range overtaking punch that, unlike a diseasel, keeps on building and building to near the red line. All this accompanied by the legendary five cylinder warble / howel whilst surrounded by Swedish luxury and sitting in the comfiest seats in the business, bar none! Once you've experienced it you won't go back.

You're aware the ST 225 engine is the Volvo 2.5T (a.k.a the 'T5' in the ford platform C30 / S40 / V50 models)? Strange that could therefore not 'outdrag' you.

It was an impromptu bit of fun from 40mph, at around 90mph the focus pulled away quite easily. The focus ST is both lighter and more powerful than my S60 and far more tunable as well. With 300bhp easily achievable with just bolt on mods and a remap. The same is true of the volvo S40,V50and C30 with the same engine.

Is there really much difference between a T5 and and R? 0-60 time isn't really normal on the road driving.

Perhaps in modern terms the T5 isn't that fast, I would say its not bad at all and will possibly get one in next year or so, but in a world of hot hatches pushing 250-300bhp and more, a heavy estate with 250bhp probably isn't deemed that quick anymore. All depends on your benchmark!

I had an 03 plate V70 R manual, bought it at 2 years old and ran it for nearly 4 years. I sold it with 80K on the clock, never had any trouble with it. My brother- in-law had a brand new B7 RS4 at the time and I drove that, it was in a different league regarding power, handling and braking but he sold it after 18 months as it was far too small! It was the avant and the rear legroom and boot were a joke.
I've never been one to worry about potential problems with some models, Internet hype. Have run a V10 M5 for over 2 years and it's been perfectly reliable. Go and buy the R. I found I could drive like a looney and it just gripped and gripped even in the wet, loved it. |
