Default 340 1.4 auto Engine will not Pull

I had a fault on my 1.4 last night where the engine would idle perfectly but if you even revved it up it would die back to idle. It would not drive the car along unless I pulled out full choke.

Checks already performed:
Fuel pump: chucks plenty petrol out of the filter hole with filter removed.
Carb top screws: all tight
Fuel filter: clean

The fault has now mysteriously gone away again after I blew an air duster down the air correction jets.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what can cause this? The symptoms don't indicate a dodgy idle solenoid as I have already had one of those and this is different).

Probably a blocked fuel jet, caused by a bit of grit in the fuel supply. You could try taking the flosat chamber cover off and unscrewing the main jets and blowing through them. Don't poke anything other than maybe a tissue otherwise you'll enlarge the very soft brass holes.

The cover's very fiddly to get off because of all the stupid connections to the choke flap and pneumatic choke, so its probably best to take the entire carb off the car and do it on the kitchen table so you don't lose any bits.

Default Thankyou

Thanks for that. I was going to replace the carb anyway.

NB while we're on replacement carbs - GSF are discontinuing their Weber replacements for B14 and B17 engines.
