Default 340 1.4 Clutch porblem

The 340 died today and had to come home on a recovery truck. The RAC mechanic has advised that the clutch has collapsed. This is a new description for me - can anyone tell me roughly what it means? I am presuming a replacement clutch will be required.

sounds like the thrust bearing has gone through the pressure plate, did it make any noise, is the pedal down to the floor? Does sound like new clutch time.

I have asked the Mods to shift this to the correct place for me - thanks for the input so far.
