I've just had clutch, dmf, slave cylinder and awd coupling done. All genuine parts.
Stealer £1550
Indy £1600
I went with the stealer

One day I'm going to add up all the bits I've had to have done, but I know the number is going to seriously **ss me off. This has been the most unreliable car I've ever had, and I've had Land Rovers!!!!

Could have been worse, an auto box would be double that!
What's the AWD coupling? AOC or has a manual got a different setup?

It's the bit between the gearbox output shaft and the angle gear, it's a splined tube that sits over the output / input shafts to couple them together. Generally it's knackered at ~120k and if it wears then you lose AWD, but worse is that when worn and slipping it can cause enough damage to the shafts that they're scrap which then involves either a new gearbox or angle gear. Or both. Ouch.

The general opinion is that it's a sacrificial item designed to fail before too much torque damages the angle gear or rear drive train but that's never been confirmed AFAIK. A very common failure, particularly in XC90 for some reason.

As it happens the one that came off my car was in great nick and could probably have done another 100k, but while it's all in bits.....

So, how do you check for wear or failure before it destroys the shafts, given tarmac Makes and ‘invisible’ most of the time - XC70 D5 2006 143k miles

I appreciate this isn’t the C70 forum, but the D3 engine might be a common factor.

Unfortunately my D3 C70 has been a money pit since I bought it in Dec 16.

DPF, ECU, 2 injectors, turbo wastegate, two tyres delaminating, rear brake calliper, and EGR valve.

Fortunately I bought extended Warranty, which has covered nearly half of the cost.

I should have known better than buying a nearly 6 year old diesel with only 28000 on the clock, and then only doing about 6000 a year myself.......

But, top down on a fine day, which is why I bought it, and (mostly) it’s forgiven, and it’s now driven like I stole it!
