Canbus??
All. I'm not having much luck with search function. Is there a list of what lights are canbus or not on a 2010 XC90 rdesign? I'm wanting to upgrade the full interior lights (and possibly footwell lights) to led.

Unfortunately I don't have access to any software. I'm looking to replace the internal light bulbs /lamps for led bulbs. I know if you put canbus lamps in a non canbus socket they'll play up (flicker etc) and vice versa. I don't want to spend money buying the wrong lamp so I am hoping to find out (although you may have indirectly answered it there anyway) if I need a canbus lamp or non canbus lamp.

I think the issue here is not whether the lamps are controlled by processors, which issue instructions over the canbus (as Swiss points out - all of them are) but whether a specific type of lamp is required to prevent an error being detected.
From my limited awareness of such things, the error detection is there so the "system" can detect, and let you know, that a lamp has blown. I would assume this would normally be for (road) safety reasons so internal lamps may not be affected, unlike brake, head, side and indicator lamps which are. If you choose to fit high impedance/resistance LED lamps - they will "look" to the processors as if they are blown open circuit or not there at all. This is helpful as you can simply remove (one by one obv) the lamps you wish to "upgrade" to LED. If you get no warning of lamp failure, you are probably OK to replace with "ordinary" LED If you do get a warning then it may be necessary to use "canbus suitable" replacement LED lamps for that position. They will probably have a ballast resistor incorporated to "fool" the processor into seeing the correct impedance/resistance and thus not triggering the warning. Cheers Dave |

Harley Dave is correct
Lamp failure detection is based on the current draw of a standard incandescent bulb. Fitting any sort of bulb which draws much less current, such as an LED, will cause the vehicle to think the lamp has failed. Solution is 1. either turn off the lamp failure detection (not possible in a Volvo) 2. or fit a load resistor to bring the current draw back up to what the system expects. This is the easiest solution for the Volvo XC90. Generally, as Harley Dave says, all the exterior lamps are monitored, as they need to be working for road safety and vehicle compliance reasons. Interior lamps are not monitored, and thus no warning occurs if they fail, are removed, or are replaced with any another type of lamp that uses less power (and consume less current).

I changed all interior bar the footwells I think (not driven at night for ages ado can't recall)
I prefer it as far brighter. Found the originals very dull and now it's night and bright. The missus and kids don't agree with me as they say it's too bright. |
