Default V70 Heater Matrix Replacement

Hi all,

Following some googling and subsequent pulling of trim off, I've diagnosed a sopping passenger footwell to the heater matrix.

I've pulled away as much of the trim as is obvious and removed the glove box and it looks like a fairly straight forward job to replace other than the large bit of trim (which looks to be connected to the whole dash) blocking the way,

Looking for advice from anyone who's managed to do this without pulling the whole dash off which is probably beyond my capabilities. Picture below

Many thanks

Hi.
It`s less likely to be the failure of the matrix and more likely to be the failure of the seals on the two pipes. They are O-rings.
If you do a search there is a write-up on how to go about changing them.
I can`t remember if it`s on this forum or another .

I hadn't considered that, if it is then that would certainly be a lot simpler!

I'll let you know how I get on once I've sourced some correct size o-rings to test the theory.

These might give you some guidance:

Both of these deal with LHD cars, which seem to have slightly different interior paneling on the LH side to yours - you may have to come up with a work around for that. I'd suggest the realistic option is carefully cutting away the obstructing panel and refixing it afterwards (Araldite is marvelous stuff, perhaps with a bit of reinforcement, maybe even pop riveting a backing piece in). It's in a place that won't really be seen, and at least you won't have the steering column in the way.

First replace the O-rings since it's cheaper, simpler and the cheaper Nissens aftermarket matrix has less and bigger diameter (to have same total flow) parallel flow tubes than the original and has therefore less coolant-to-heater surface area.
Hella/Behr one is same as OEM but costs more than twice the price so just replace O rings and hope that's done with it.

Hi.
This is the post I was thinking of.
He cut the lower clip to get it out. much easier than removing the damper motor, and fitted the clip from the opposite direction.-simples.

Thanks all for the replies, I've got the O-rings replaced, just faffing about with trying to fit the clips back now.

Just a note about the threads detailing the need to cut the clip - If you undo the torx bolt holding the heater in place you can slide the heater out far enough past the control box to pull out the clip. The details about needing to refit the clip from the opposite direction still hold though.

With RHD cars looks indeed like a chore to remove the unit

For the two clips securing the pipes, be sure each clip is perfectly flat - they do bend while being removed and if not reshaped back properly they will never go back in there. The clips go back really easily when the correct shape, just pushing with the fingers on it. Also be sure the pipe is fully inserted and really staying perpendicular in there - a little silicone (only) grease on the seal will help seating it easier

Finally got those pesky clips back in and looks like the heater is going to need replacing too - frankly I think that's going to be too much bother so I might just try and bypass the heater and deal with the cold.
