Thats as maybe, however we bought it with history from a dealer with just under 100k on the clock, by no means in its first flush of youth. why would the next owner get a 'nasty' surprise? If items were changed in respect of the manufactures maintence spec there wouldn't be anything. Rather than just changing stuff for the sake of changing things.
We do the same with our transport, items have a useful life and when that is reached they are changed as specced by the vehicles builders. That way you get the best possible life and things don't breakdown. If however you want waste money changing things for the sake of it be my guest... Sweeping generalisation below:
What you spend on the car depends on the age and condition of it. All cars have parts that wear out at a certain time and will need replacing. Brakes, shocks, suspension bushes etc, all have a finite lifetime and need replacing at various times during a cars life. The more powerful a car and the harder you drive it the more quickly things wear out .. Personal non Volvo example: Last year my VW Bora had new discs/pads all round, shocks, suspension bushes, cambelt, clutch etc. so last year it had about £1k spent on it. This year however it will need none of those things doing, so should just be routine maintenance, and sub £200. |

I suppose what I am trying to achieve, by having this poll, is what it has cost me in my first year of ownership of my car is reasonable, considering its age (02) and present mileage (149K).
Hopefully, it will get to a stage where after my next impending expenditures, eg, front discs, front cv joint/abs reluctor ring, 4 new tyres, lower ball joints, will be the last for a while. Just seems like I fix one problem then another one appears I regret to this day selling my previous V70R due to the fact that it needed 4 new tyres, a service and cam belt/ carriers /water pump change....all at the same time. Just did not have the money (at that time) to pay for it all, hence the sale.

I guess there are people around who rather than wait for something to happen they will tinker and fiddle around. Don't get me wrong I am not knocking those who wish to improve or customise their cars and of course servicing takes care of it. This is also when i check mine over for thinks that will need doing in the future...

I would call this "preventative maintenance" which involves replacing something that is wearing out, early, rather than waiting for the part to fail, then having to replace it.

I'm finding this thread very interesting.
Having just bought a 104k mile v70 t5 for not much more than a grand in lovely condition, I know that I'll probably spend that much again replacing niggling things, generally sorting it out to a standard that will give me daily regular transport. Brakes, tyres, oil changes, suspension, cam belts, bushes etc all wear out regardless of car. What makes this subject difficult is that the cars overall value is very low anyway and that doing all the bits that are needed only add negligible value to the car too! I've basically written off the and forgotten about the purchase price and value of my v70, I'm now more interested in how long I can keep it going for. I think the only show stoppers for me would be an engine seize or auto box failure. |

I think it was Bill 56 who earlier this week coined the wonderful 'provocative maintenance' for those of us on the compulsive fiddler side of the house. I have been caught out a few times by idle curiosity. I have been exceptionally lucky with all my cars - a 'bad' year would nudge the €800 mark if say tyres coincided with timing belt. But then I do most of the work myself and as my time is priceless the real cost is.................. I don't look at the maintenance figure per se but the combined total of depreciation and maintenance and on that basis the thing gets cheaper to run every year until the inevitable end.
