Default 2013 V70 2.4 D5 timing belt

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice if possible regarding my 2013 V70 2.4 D5.

My car is due a service soon and dealer has told me it's due the timing belt change as part of the service which I have been quoted £960 for.

That includes - oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter, timing belt and auxiliary belts. (No water pump) as they said no one ever changes them as they don't fail.

The car is now 6 years old and has covered 63,500 miles.

They then stated that due to the mileage it doesnt need done so up to me if I want it changed or just carry out a service excluding the timing belt??

Can someone please confirm what the service intervals are for the timing belt on my year of V70 and if it should be done on age or mileage (whatever comes 1st).

10 years or 108k miles whichever sooner.

The 6 year confusion is because it is the 108k (6 x 18kmiles) mile service. But if you haven’t done 108k miles you can wait until 10 years. My belt at 10 year/60k miles looked like new when it was replaced.

Pay attention to the aux belt, that is the weak point. That should have been done either on recall or 54k miles.

A bag of sand for a service, even with a cam belt is taking the Michael. But that’s Volvo stealers for you.

At 63,500, the aux belt should have been recently changed at 54,000 and if it was not, it needs replacing urgently along with the associated tensioners. It is the aux belt which is the one most likely to fail and then it takes out the cam belt which is otherwise a sturdy item. If the aux belt was changed at 54,000 or on a time basis at 5 years, you do not need to change either belt now. You could always contact Volvo UK and tell them what the dealer proposed and ask them if they would educate him on belt change intervals and redeem Volvo's good name!

Thanks for the fast responses.

I have owned the car just under a year now and as far as I'm aware the aux belt hasn't been changed so I will get that done along with the service.

Had the car passed the 54,000 miles or 5 years when you bought it?
Did you buy it from the dealer who you are expecting to service it?
Does it have a Volvo service history?
If so, ask the dealer to interrogate the vehicle’s service history to ascertain what has already been done and when.
When my daughter bought her used XC70 from the dealer the sales person was rather vague about when belts etc. had been changed, merely stating that it had been dealer serviced since new. It was quite important as the car had 88,000 recorded miles and was then 6 years old, so aux. belt etc. should have already been done. We persisted and were eventually able to speak face to face with the service manager who interrogated the system and provided us with a print out of the service history. Daughter signed up to a service contract but this did not include the cam belt change at 108,000 miles. One year later, at 101,000 miles, the car had it’s 7 year service. Due to expecting to exceed the 108,000 miles before the next service we negotiated a cam belt etc. change in addition to the annual service. Service manager did us a “good customer” deal. It cost £340.00. (I had bought my 940 from them and it was the third Volvo my daughter had bought from them.) Be firm, persistent and polite and make it obvious that you know what you are talking about. They are there to serve you and your vehicle.

I bought the car in November 2018 as a private buy with 57k miles on the clock.

The first 3 services were at a Volvo dealer but next 2 at a local garage so not a full Volvo service history unfortunately.

I think I'll have to bite the bullet and get them changed as there is no record of them being changed.

£960 seems a bit steep though but is that the going rate for the major service including timing belt?

That does sound rather a lot of money, but you shouldn’t need the timing/cam belt yet. Just the aux. belt and tensioner.

You certainly do not have to change the cam belt. It has 40,000 miles left before that happens and at the current annual mileage that will take you to another four years which also happens to be the ten year time limit on cam belts. You need to know if the aux belt was ever changed and if it was, it wouldn't need changing either. If it was changed at any time you are within mileage and time to spare. So only have it done if you cannot find any record of it being changed and in that case get it done soon. Don't fall for the cam belt change, it isn't needed and it is the costlier of the two belts to change. Being careful with belt changes is laudable but being conned into unnecessary expense is shameful.

You're cambelt isn't due for replacement until the vehicle is ten years old, or has 108,000 miles on it (Whichever comes first). As you have no record of the aux belts being changed (Due at 54,000 miles or five years), I'd get them changed ASAP & replace the aux belt tensioner whilst you're at it because that's the part that's prone to failure. Normally the tensioner is replaced in addition to the cam belt on the 108,000 mile service, but for the sake of a £60 part plus labour, it would be peace of mind for you to get it replaced now with the aux belts.

Look elsewhere & get cheaper quotes, but I'd suggest only using genuine Volvo parts & not the aftermarket alternatives. You could buy genuine parts yourself & get a local garage to fit them for you. Or, find an Independent Volvo Specialist to do the job and it should most certainly be much cheaper than what the dealership are charging you... £960 is just a rip off, don't pay it!

Are the Aux belts 3 years regardless of miles. Only asking as my Aux belts were changed at 3 years at which point I had covered roughly 18k. Car is now 7 years old and I have covered 25k ( that's right 7k in 4 years )

Had it serviced at Voltech recently and they suggested I got Aux belts changed
