Default Torque converter

Hi everyone, pretty sure my torque converter is in the way out, thought it was the gearbox but got every symptom of a bad TQ.

Rough idling, slipping on acceleration but goes if accelerate harder to increase rpm and increase pressure and it holds gears longer than in should, I will have it looked at by a specialist for final diagnosis.

But my question is, is it a job you can do yourself or is it best to let someone else do it I am tempted to have ago but was seeing if anyone has done it and is worth having ago yourself. I’m fairly handy with the spanner’s as I’ve just repaired my a class cvt box but never attempted a torque converter before thanks a lot.

Daniel

I don't really see how a torque converter can fail - its just a big tin can with vanes.

Wouldn't it more likely be the shift solenoids?

Torque converters can get weaker with age, especially on "chipped" cars but they are usually consistently weaker across the whole rev range. The symptoms you describe could also be gearbox related (flare/slip).

First step is try new oil, if no good then time to speak to a specialist.

The gearbox can be removed by a DIY mechanic but it's a big job and you need to be health and safety aware.... I did a post on it around 2014.

I think it’s the clutches in the torque converter that’s on its way out I’ve had a new valve block fitted 18 months ago, everything I’ve read points to the TQ a lot of people have told me they have their gearbox rebuilt when it’s the TQ at fault.

I think there’s only one clutch in the torque converter which provides the lock-up (I.e. over 55 mph in top gear).

Cheers for that I’ve read it’s the clutch in the TQ that does the drive from the engine to the gearbox and that is what is slipping. But probably is the gearbox at fault, looks like a rebuild is not to far away.

Hi Daniel, for what it's worth, my torque converter slipping caused the same transmission code, but the only physical symptom was a shudder when accelerating beween 50 and 60 when I am told the transmission should lock up. I had no other physical symptoms such as flaring

Mine was down to a leaking rad with water entering the transmission oil via the cooler. New rad and gearbox flush sorted it and no re occurance since.

Mine is a similar year/mileage and just going through engine and gearbox out experience to have engine replaced,, so you have my sympathies. Good luck!
