yep, you will need to send the registration doc off (the V5) with section 7 filled out with the new engine number, you might want to contact HPI as they may log this against the vehicle as well and perfectly innocent stuff like an engine swap can put off prospective buyers if you ever sell.

HPI do also get things wrong, had my Wifes Beetle logged as a colour change from blue to yellow which was total tosh!

Good luck with the new engine, personally would push for the new lambda and cat as buring oil cant have done them any good, can't think how you test a cat has not had its life shortened by burnt oil.

Just to update everyone who was following this, the car has spent the week over in Southampton having the engine replaced. They had hoped to get it all done and ready for me to collect today, but they just called to say the new engine is the latest model and requires different gaskets which have to come from Sweden... So it's gonna be at least 4 more days whilst they turn up! Oh well.

Hopefully I can pick it up next week with the oil problem fixed, full service and new clutch and it'll be as good as new (fingers crossed!!!)

On another note, when I was on the phone to Volvo UK I was told that they have had another 1.8 2004 S40 with the same problem, which they are also looking into, so who knows, maybe this is the start of a dodgy batch of Ford engines?!

I'll let you know what the results are when I collect the car next week.

Cheers,
Matt

I have my car back!!

My god, what a difference

The new engine is smooth, quiet, and seems much quicker and more powerful than the one that was taken out last week.

I had the new clutch fitted after advice from several forum members, in the end it cost me £390 just for the parts, but it was well worth it! The old clutch was really springy and quite hard to change gear smoothly with, the new clutch is smooth and a much lighter spring. Really pleased with it

All the rattles and knocks that had been plaguing me throughout the last 6 months have completely dissapeared. The nasty rattling sound was the cam cover vibrating due to the seals having burst cos of the high pressure caused by the faulty piston oil ring seals.

The other knocks were cos the last garage that replaced the a/c system didn't install half of the pipe brackets, so all the hoses and pipes were rattling around under the bonet!

So in the end it took them 8 days to repair the car, and they drove the car down to me to save me getting to the garage. Can't tell you how happy I was to see it (they'd valeted it inside and out, looked great!)

The drive is silky smooth, rattle and noise free and a real pleasure to drive now. Much better than the day I first had it!

So at the end of this saga I have managed to get Volvo to do the following:

1: Replace the air conditioning compressor
2: Replace the power steering motor
3: Replace the EGR Valve
4: Replace the engine
5: Pay for the 3 year service
6: Pay for all travel costs (ferry) to get the car to the garage
7: gave me a £50 voucher
8: Wash my car

And all I've had to pay for is a new clutch and a set of wiper blades (£420 in total).

Really really pleased, especially as it's just in time for Christmas and I can now enjoy it to the full.

I hate to think how much Volvo have eventually paid to get my car fixed, but i bet it's more than 50% of the current market value!!

A big thanks must go to Shimon and all the other members that have PM'd me with legal advice and opinions. And also big thanks to Kings Volvo Southampton for actually sorting everything out despite Volvo UK's incompetence!!

Happy Christmas to all the members on the forum from a (now) very happy Volvo owner

Hi,

That is the sort of story that Volvo UK should be aiming to have with most of their customer complaints..

It is a shame that it was marred in the initial stages by a less than competent garage.

However, you are now happy and the case resolved satisfactorily for you..
And you now have a decent Volvo to drive..

Excellent outcome for you.. Enjoy you "new" volvo...

Des. . .

Yep I think all the problems I had can be put down to the incompetent garage and dodgy customer services. I received all my cheques from Volvo today so they even managed to reimburse me in time for Christmas

I've just taken the car for a 400 mile round trip to Canterbury, and apart from it being absolutely caked in grit and salt (wish I had the headlight cleaners now!) it drove perfectly and was an absolute pleasure to drive

Will be spending tomorrow morning washing all the crap off it now, (pointless this time of year, but i hate having a dirty car, lol)
