I find 4th and 5th are very similar ratios but it helps for towing as the car stays in 6th at motorway speeds and doesn't flick back and forth between 5th and 6th like my previous Vectra auto did when towing. I don't mind the £285 per year rfl or mid 30's mpg my car gives me for the comfort of the auto box. With having a bad back it's hard work driving a manual car these days for any length of time (indeed the 2 weeks I spent without my car while the new PAS pump was being fitted killed me!) so I'll live with it until 200k appears and it can be traded for a 215bhp 8 speeder or a Jag XF 3.0d Sportbrake...
Mines a 2.0D3 6speed auto S80 and 70mph is under 2000rpm, 75mph is 2000rpm, 90mph is 2500rpm and to get it to 3k you are looking at around 105mph (I've only ever gone 110mph in it when in Europe last year) and IIRC it registered just over 3k rpm

I think it's because mine is AWD but it's deffo 2250 rpm at 70mph I promise. 2000rpm is about 58mph so there is a big difference. I don't mind though like I said, I can live with it and it helps with towing

Hi,

I used to have (many moons ago) a manual 740. It was great on a long run.

However, driving to work, within the outer parts of London, it really was a PITA. Manuals and stop/start traffic do not go together! When you spend 30 minutes getting to the red lights and are applying and releasing the clutch all the time... No fun!

So the next car was an auto 940. What a godsend!

The posh cars since came as auto only ( although the S80 is "triptronic") and still driving city traffic means I am not "unhappy".

The triptronic adds an advantage. Pop into "manual" and floor the accelerator and the car will accelerate to the red line and automatically change to the next gear.

Also, as the auto boxes also have "gear selection" you can, to a lesser degree" select which gears you are using..

Overall, I am an auto fan..

Des. . .
