As above, wanted a C30 diesel automatic, must be automatic and the 2.0 engine, not D5.

Just wondering what your particular reason is for your choice?

You'll find the D5 superior in every way and in real world use every bit as economical but more fun. You would also get a proper auto box and not the powershift box which can be troublesome and extremely expensive to repair. More that the D5's Aisin Warner box anyway. The type of fitted DPF filter should be taken into consideration too. D5 = fuel added on exhaust stoke and no mandatory replacement intervals, 2.0d = EOLYS fluid and EOLYS topup every 37,500 and complete DPF and EOLYS every 75,000 miles.

Of course tax and insurance might be marginally more if these are the driving factors?

Given the choice I'd be opting for D5 Volvo engine over the 2.0d Ford engine any day of the week.

It comes down to cheaper fuel economy and cheaper tax and insurance for the mother in law who does a fair few miles and is on a budget. She would be more than happy with the power of a 2.0D.

As a professional automotive technician I am not phased by the DPF, I'm well used to topping up the EOLYS fluid and though the schedule says to replace the DPF at 75k it's not necessary, aftermarket ones are not expensive in any case.

I actually like the Ford/Peugeot diesel engines, as long as you change the oil regularly (10k) using fully synthetic oil of the correct specification they're a powerful, reliable fugal unit.

I do agree though that the D5 is a great engine, I have a D5 geartronic XC70 on the fleet.

I now see why the 2.0d is favourable. I also agree they are good engines and also that servicing is the key. An EGR delete if nothing else would be recommended although a remap and EGR delete works well.

Good luck with the hunt, there is some cracking C30's out there. What is the budget?? Have you considered the 2.0d D3 or D4 engine? They are very very good.

Sony hate to correct you but the powershift box on the 2.0D was a dry filter type not an eolys one and was an odd exception to the rest of the manual 2.0D range.

Additionally when i was in a d5 c30 the front end was just understeer understeer and more horrific unfersteer thanks to the extra weight made it pretty pointless overall.

Thanks for the correction Ninja you are absolutely correct. The power shift does have the decent non replacement type DPF so that in itself is a bonus for the OP.

I have driven many C30 D5's though and wouldn't say I experienced this mass understeer that you have. Granted there was a little but certainly nothing worth comment and nothing I'd say was any more than the 2.0d I've driven. I'm actually surprised you don't get more torque steer.

The best compromise is a D3 or D4 engine.

If the DPF is neglected at the 75000 mile service it will fail before 100000 miles is reached and cause a breakdown , poor fuel consumption and Engine oil dilution .... how much are non genuine Particle filters for the 2.0D anyway?

Between £200-£300 as I saw recently.

Sadly they are completely pointless as they only change the location of the pollution and not the quantity of it with the addition of a toxic fluid to burn and some extra cost to the owner...

i wouldnt bother when a genuine one is £290 ! I have only seen 2 non genuine ones fitted , both gave problems so you end up paying over £600 for your working particle filter .
