S80 ‘08 2.4D suspected fuel pump issues

Hi all

Was recently driving my Volvo S80 2.4D when the engine cut out. When trying to restart the car the engine would try to turn over but not complete.

Called the AA who gave the fuel tank a whack and that got it going?

Assuming it’s the pump in the tank that has problems, does anyone know where I can source that part from and how big a job it is to replace?

Did the AA give you some kind of job report, or even an indication of what might be wrong?

You need to get the car properly diagnosed at a Volvo dealership or Volvo Specialist - They have the correct equipment for the car, many 'ordinary' garages don't because they use generic scan tools that aren't necessarily designed for Volvo's. The car should have stored a fault code when it failed to start, so diagnostics is the only way to access the fault codes to find out exactly what's wrong. I wouldn't just go out & buy a fuel pump on a whim when you don't actually know if that's causing the issue.

Diagnose first, then repair. Otherwise, you could spend a lot of money buying a part & then paying the labour costs to fit it (Or your own time if you plan to do it yourself), to find yourself back in the same predicament when it doesn't work. Of course, diagnostics aren't usually free either, but it'd be cheaper to pay a Volvo garage or a Specialist to find out exactly what's wrong with your car than to go out & buy a part assuming that's the issue & it might not be.

That would be my advice.

I replaced my in tank pump recently after it failed. It was a MAIN dealer only part though. Cost £400 but with the swansea dealer forum discount was £300. Its relatively easy but make sure you empty the tank first and have lots of cloths.
The hardest part is replacing the heatshields as the screws had all rusted off on mine.

BUT - I agree with the other poster above - get it plugged into a vida and have it diagnosed properly first - parts bingo on Volvo will be expensive.

PS change you fuel filter first with a genuine volvo one.

No you don't need a Volvo specialist for that. Just disconnect the fuel supply line, have someone crank the car up, if the fuel doesn't leak out then the fuel sender unit took a crap. But first check the fuel relay and a fuse, not all Volvos have them but hey.
