Default C70 suspension noise

Got a twang sound (spring?) on my 2004 T5, from the near side suspension when turning right, usually when unloaded and not always just on full lock. Springs are new, car has recently passed an MOT and nothing is loose.

My 2003 car has recently started to make the same sound but not as frequent, again, new springs and recent MOT but car is rearly used. Is this a common 70 series issue?

Sounds similar to something I recently experienced on my 99 V70, might want to inspect the top mount under the top washer/bush I found the metal tube in the top mount had parted company with the rubber on a cheap 2 year old replacement, I think it was due to the top bearing becoming stiff.

That new spring might not have seated properly. Sometimes worth giving the spring a thump with a mallet after fitting. The spring can twist when depressed if its not in its proper place.

The chances are it is a spring that needs seating, however it may also be a drop-link. I've had drop links go and sound like your 'twang' as opposed to a knock..

I'll do an inspection

I fitted the springs myself and have looked to see if they are seated properly. Just changed drop links as they were picked up as an advisory on the MOT - noise has been going on for a while, before MOT and nothing was mentioned other than the drop links

Ok, so you can rule those out then. If it wasn't spotted on MOT, then you can probably be assured that its not something with excessive play. As for it being a common fault on 70's, I'm not aware of it.

CarlW's suggestion is well worth an inspection. I've replaced both those on my V70, but.. if I remember correctly there was no tell tale noise to give a clue as to wear.

However, its really odd that the same symptoms are appearing on two different cars. The commonality of the spring changes seems to point to that area, at least the work involved. Maybe the new springs are showing up wear elsewhere, again.. CarlW's Top Mount suggestion..

Let us know if you find the cause.. I'm intrigued.

Dave..

I would also suspect the spring seating.

When I bought my C70 the two rear springs had been replaced - it had lived in the Fens all its life.

I noticed a twang coming from the nearside rear when going over minor bumps or sleeping policemen. Had a look and found the offside spring had about 10mm clearance between the spring and the delta arm, but the nearside - one spring coil was rubbing on the delta arm - hence the twang when it 'popped by' the arm. I compressed the spring and rotated it a few degrees to gain the clearance as per the other side. A simple seating issue quickly resolved.

It is puzzling that it's the same side on both cars - the common denominator here is that I changed the springs on both cars. That said, it would be a bit of a coincidence that I've made an error in assembling only the near side on both cars.

The only other thing I considered is worn lock stops allowing too much lock but it's only when turning right and the wear looks the same on both sides.
