RE: Bigger rods and pistons
Whats that in £££ then?
PS-no doubt they will have checked this and thats why there is no crank, but make sure that the crankshaft can take that as well, or it might not be a joyous moment the first time you floor it lol.

RE: Bigger rods and pistons
All i can say is be very wary of these American sites with claims of Ferrari killing power!!
I have looked at one American site that claims 20bhp for a polished inlet manifold, 20bhp for a gasflowed exhaust manifold and 20 bhp for a larger throttle body!! I dont think so somehow!! |

RE: Bigger rods and pistons
Cheers Guys,
I think its definatley worth investigating a little more, any ideas who in the UK could supply the crank, pistons and rods? I do agree some of the american sites have a tendency to exagerate a little on the power side. Regards Paddy - Jason |

RE: Bigger rods and pistons
It's because the Americans have to have everything bigger, one US of A horsepower equates to about 3 UK ponies.

RE: Bigger rods and pistons
i know the person in comment - from my dealings with building a race engine for the mandersons through mark hannaford
the full setup can be had in the uk - and the crank doesnt need changing . Apparently the pistons can be std volvo since they are pretty good in design - so the info goes , but they may not fit the new rods in question - i dont know how they were getting round it - but i have seen such an engine with uprated rods.

RE: Bigger rods and pistons
Jason,
As Dave says, Mark Hannaford has built at least one 5 cyl.engine for a Sports Racing project for the Mandersons. The engine remains uninstalled, the project apparently abandoned and, I understand,is for sale for a price far in excess of the sum of its parts. It has special rods, pistons and has the head reworked with 3 angle valve seats etc., plus mildly reprofiled cams. I do not know what the intention was as regards the turbo to be used, but on an out and out racer, there would be no problem in locating a big Garrett. There is another engine just completed by another party about to be installed in an 850. The owner has bought special rods, pistons and had the cams reprofiled, and the head reworked. He has a huge Garrett sited over the gearbox with all the special pipework to get the exhaust gasses to it and away. With regard to engines with an 18 or 19T there is really no need to specify stronger rods as the later Volvo rods (still in the present T5's,part no.1270483) are good for anything these turbos can produce: provided that pressure is well under control at low revs. You cannot use the yet stronger rods in the new R's as the bore, stroke and position of the pins are different: or the matching pistons for the same reasons. The standard current T5 pistons are well designed with deep skirts and large diameter, well placed pins: good with 18/19T. These special engines may well be good for 380/400bhp, but with any configuaration of 18/19T, 300 plus is virtually unobtainable due to the inability of these small turbos to maintain high boost pressures at high revs.. You need only to consider Volvo's own new R models with their KKK turbos, slightly larger displacement, different exhaust manifolds and so on, where Volvo have been panned for not making their claimed outputs and tuners struggling to get much more than 330bhp, to realise the true limits of the earlier engines. In conclusion, there is a Swedish specialist in Trollhaten: Atechmotor owned by Peter Carvell who is currently building 400bhp or so 4 and 5 pot Volvo engines, mainly for drag racing I believe.... have a look at www.atechmotor.com he is a good man..... bought one of my LSD's. Finally, Jason if you want to 'phone me I can give you details of the sources of the rods, pistons, cams etc., that these various firms are using. These specialist component Manufacturer's kit is pretty pricey, they give little trade discount, so I really cannot be arsed at present to try and make a few bob out of it. RE: Bigger rods and pistons
Even the 850 T5 rods can take over 1.5 bar boost, but as you say not at low revs.
As for the new R, although the engine itself is highly over-engineered, the restrictions around it seem to be what prevents good gains. In fact, a tuned 16T T5 is faster than the new R, and a tuned 19T T5 is a lot faster. And the new R GT is diabolically slow in comparison to the manual version. Adam. |
