The real risk I see is being stolen for parts...if a professional outfit want to strip it, they could have it away and stripped before you even know it's gone. Even Tracker can't stop someone who is determined to have it away, and the Police would just find the engineless bare burned out chassis.

I was thinking more about a container designed specifically to block emf signals....kind of like a Faraday cage?

Come on, guys, our cars are nice but I doubt if they are that attractive to thieves. Faraday cages? I doubt it. For a Countach or an Enzo, maybe, but a T5? Nah!

Hi guys,
Thanks to all who replied with information on car security, after spending a lot of money on my car making various modifications to the engine etc. i have decided to upgrade the alarm based on a report received from a very reputable source about how these cars can be taken by professional car thieves,i wont go into details but its simple trust me i was shown,it involves gainning access to the car, alarm sounds 10-20 sec, alarm is silenced without lifting the bonnet,10-20 secs later drive away after bypassing alarm and immobiliser, and its that simple. (scary)
My new system is being fitted by a car security company who specialise in alarms fitted to BMW M3,Jag XKR,Mitsu EVOs,suburu sti etc and they had also made me aware of this problem on the Volvo platforms,i should have it installed by wed. once i do i will post a message with more detail.
The one piece of advice i was given even when the alarm is installed is a good thick chain and padlock welded to the floor pan of the car,not looped around the seat .

Thanks again guys.

Jason

I too have worried and fretted over this one but having done some research it seems car insurance - irrespective of alarm fitted - is based on your postcode, market or agreed value of car and propensity for being stolen ie their database and your history.(Insurance is only maths and probability).

If the average says it will get stolen, you get lumped as being likely to get stolen - most stolen car is the Nova!

Having a car alarm fitted makes no difference, putting it away in a locked Garage at night does.

Having a car alarm that is Thatcham Cat 1 fitted by you makes no difference. Having it fitted by an Approved Installer does but, only by a small amount.

Having a Thatcham Cat 1 alarm fitted with all the bits - £600 plus and doesnt guarantee its toerag or flame proof.

Decent Krooklock - £70 ish - yes it can be got past but all your buying is time. Maybe 2 mins if you are lucky.

Protected no claims bonus - depends on your own personal circumstances but I think the better deal and put a K-lock on just to reassure yourself. Can you get a better postcode - I hear Oxfordshire is better than most? What youre really insuring is the hassle factor in getting mobile and recompensed.

At the end of the day, if they want your car professionaly, they will take it and you wont be able to stop them. If its toerags, you might but it may end up an insurance write off anyway.

And I wouldnt try the thick chain trick, look how many bikes are stolen every day with good thick chains and it will affect your resale value! You could always put a chain round the axle when it is in the garage but make sure you remember that every morning or....."two wheels on my wagon and I'm not rolling along!"

Tony

be warned....dont even think of touching my car...it's got the South African version fitted!

Tony, would you by any chance be an ex member of a South African pop group? If so I have one of these gents living near to me and thought that there might be a connection.

All the best, Peter

Hi Guys,
Well i got the upgraded alarm fitted the system is called Autowatch with built in immobisers and anti hijack system, which really is the one i was looking for.
It basically means once the engine is started and any doors open on the car/or not the system arms a count down sequence which firstly alerts the driver that the anti hijack is on by 1 short beep of the horn and 1 flash of the hazard lights,30 sec later horn sounds 5 times and 5 flashes of lights ,then 20 sec later horn beeps to unusual sequence, alarm goes off and lights flash on and off and engine cuts out,a tiny button has been fitted for me to switch the system off before this happens and it resets itself once the doors are opened again. Its developed in South Affrica i believe, but what i liked about it is if the scum bag thief breaks into the house takes the keys 1 mile later he away from me with a car that will not run,or the hi-jack scam of the car getting bumped getting out to see damage and someone else jumps into the car,i live in Ireland so and have been followed in the car on a couple of occasions so this alarm i hope will help me keep my baby a little longer.
Hope this is of some help, after the relay story i am not taking chances..

It must be a good alarm as it comes from the country where car hi-jacking is the national sport after rape!
Cheers,
Ian

Peter,
No, not a member of a pop group, let alone a South African one. My singing is about bad enough to get onto Pop Idol though -

Who remembers the Pub Singer on Steve Wright in the Afternoon on good old Radio 1?

Hi those films you speak of do not actually prevent the window being smashed, but what it does do is hold the glass together after it has been smashed!!

Hey, you could always take out all your windows and replace them with 10mm polycarbonate, me thinks they might struggle to smash them then :)
