Electric fan as has AC. Does AC work? Suspect not.
Engine was running and started while fully warm. If you view make sure to start it from cold. Engine hard to say as never recorded mine. What 2 litre engine is it? If interference, needs timing belt urgently. A 940 is a great car to DIY on and simple to get too. James. Last edited by volvo always; May 19th, 2020 at 18:18. |

I will do. I had actually asked him to warm it up because I wanted to know if the temp gauge as well as the other gauges worked and also to check the cars heater worked. Apparently the AC does work. 2.3L NA. Engine code is B230FB Just looked on eBay and a Volvo dealership is selling a genuine cam belt for £20! |

Although it's got receipts for work a lot of that is labour ( the £45 labour to change a rocker cover gasket as an example ) and the fact you still have to spend on tyres etc means it's going to cost a fair bit more

This was for sale on here recently to give you an idea
1996 Volvo 940se For Sale I know that during the current situation this is not the best time to be doing this but I’m putting my 940 up for sale. It’s a 1996 P reg 2.3 turbo with 126,000 miles on the clock. Mot is until November which it passed easily last year. Decent spec list includes cruise control, air con, heated seats, electric windows etc. After market stereo has been fitted. I’ve replaced the rear nivomats with normal monroe shocks and lesjofors springs as I know they’re good quality. As usual there’s always a few bad points: Central locking doesn’t work. I picked up a second hand solenoid but it was the wrong one. It’s never bothered me though just makes it more old school lol. Couple of bits of corrosion on the tailgate. Electric sunroof switch works but there’s no spring to it so you just need to hold it until it closes. Rear load blind has lost its tension so it’s just pulled over. Bit of dash trim missing above the pedals but I’ve found one on eBay. Can’t really think of anything more than that. Decent big car that pulls and drives well but I’m not using it much now as my 850 t5 is fixed. Looking for around £1200 but open to sensible offers. Just need to figure out uploading pics lol.

I love MY 1996 Volvo 940 Automatic mated to the 2.3 litre B230FK engine.
A Volvo auto is perfect! I have driven autos for 10 years now. cant beat wafting along and steering a big go cart! Don't discount an auto. Harder to abuse and also a reliable box. James. |

Welcome aboard Tom! Just looked at the video, it seems to run sweetly enough, red-blocks always sound very similar to that. Might want the valve clearances checked/adjusted at some point and it sounds like there is a blow from the front pipe/manifold or it could be the microphone on his phone/camera is a bit sensitive to certain frequencies.
About the speedo, does the ABS light come on during driving? If so, it could well be the speed sensor in the back axle which serves both the ABS and the speedo. If you've read the rest of the thread carefully up to this point there's no real advice i can add except given the paintwork and the few minor dings, it's not really a £1000 car. As Mark suggested, nearer £500. The tyres look passable from the video but will need renewing at some point in the not too distant future. Also looking at the MoT history, is it the speedometer or odometer that doesn't work? I noticed in about 2014/5, the MoT mileage stopped going up - often the odometer will die (thanks to people resetting the trip meter while moving, first kills the trip then the odo although other things can cause the odo to fail) but the speedo will still show your rate of progress. Needs clarification as to whether it's the speed or the odometer that doesn't work really - or both! Timing belt should be changed every 40k as far as i know on the red blocks so is probably halfway between just been done and needing to be done except you don't know how many miles it's done since 2014 - therefore treat it as urgent! It's an easy DIY job and would take about an hour. Plenty of knowledge and advice on here to help you though! A tip for future reference, if you do buy it and need help, please post the model, year, engine code and gearbox to give as much information as possible. Sometimes it might seem irrelevant but Volvos have little quirks where sometimes the strangest things make a difference!

After listening to the video I would say it's a bit rough. Possible blow from manifold and the coolant looks like builders tea or possibly none at all
If I wasn't so rubbish at uploading stuff onto the forum I would go outside and video mine running to give you a comparison

Also looking at MOT history it's done 2 miles in 5 years and has been presented for 7 MOT's. So unless the owner lives in the MOT station it means odometer is broken. Might not mean it's done a lot more miles than showing but it's something to bear in mind

I agree with you - seeing what others have sold for around the £1000-1500 demonstrates that the red one certainly isn't a £500 car. If I can get it for £500/600 is it worth a punt? Don't think it's worth more than £600/650 |
