Default 1968 auto box reverse not working

Hi

Spotted a nice '68 auto Volvo 145 in South Africa for sale but the owner says the auto reverse belt needs to be replaced as there is no reverse!

Just wondered what the repair process is?

Where can I source a reverse belt here in the UK?

If it's not too complicated to repair, I may just buy the belt here before I leave.

Many thanks

....or change the entire 'box, as they are not uncommon (I have a couple). If you can't undertake that yourself, labour rates might be lower in the car's homeland though. As Volvo's were locally assembled in their day, maybe one can be sourced out there.

You need to find out whether it has just lost REVERSE, or it has lost TOP and REVERSE. If it's lost REVERSE only then the rear servo seal is prone to failure, the servos can work loose, and they can crack, all of which can cause the problem, and all can be cured without removing the box (barring other damage as a result). If the rear band needs replacing it's a gearbox out job, and if it's lost TOP as well it's a rear clutch fault, and generally that's a box out job to fix as well.
