On mine it was always just a tyre,
perhaps too obvious. Swap the spare onto each wheel in turn, tedious but cheap.

The tyre thing did cross my mind. Turns out it was a UJ in the end, just a tricky one to diagnose as it wouldnt exhibit play until the driveshaft was dismounted from the car. I tried different tyre pressures initially as I thought I may have overinflated them, but to no avail.

Good! Nice that it was a simple outcome
A thought...if it was 1x UJ, is there value perhaps when the car is next serviced to replace the other and the centre bearing - a bit of preventative? Or are of the view that you only replace what is faulty..? Just thinking aloud really Nice simple conclusion tho' |

Not sure if this applies to your particular car? But the universal joints on a 240 can be lubricated- remove the grub screw & insert a grease nipple (long type are good) once done replace the grub screw.

Thanks gents. I'll see if I can lubricate the remaining original UJ as a preventative, and will get it replaced along with the propshaft centre bearing in due course as you suggested...good preventative maintenance and the sort of thing that I'm very keen on. I'd always rather keep things in tip top shape rather than await a failure.
