..on the inside

The damn thing just fell apart on me.. I assume water penetrated between the plastic cover and the mechanism and froze up overnight. Popping the trunk open in the morning stripped the cover off (breaking the tiny clips on the top of the cover..) The good thing- it still works as good as ever- the cover just slides up and down as the trunk opens/closes.. I guess this will be my first warranty claim

Holy Batman! This also just happend to my XC60 this Friday morning. Same situation. Looks like water came into the plastic cylinder inside, and froze up over night. Friday morning when opening the tailgate, a nasty crack sounded, and the cover snapped.

I'm no engineer, but I dont really think that water is supposed to go inside the cylinders. For a car developed in Sweden, where temperatures are prone to go below zero often during this season, this would be a huge problem.

Mine is going to dealer this Wednesday. Initial thoughs from them, was to replace the entire strut. Maybe a seal at the top is missing or the like.

Will keep you posted.

Yeah, this is clearly a poor design.. I suspected it wouldn't be possible to replace just the cover..

Keep us posted- I don't think I'll be able to see the dealer before the end of the month..

Now the problem hit the German drivers as well it seems. Check this thread on the German forum (use the translate funciton in e.g. Google Chrome to read the page): https://www.motor-talk.de/forum/defe...-t6523706.html. It looks like Volvo changed the design of the struts, and they are now all metal, without the plastic.

Will let you know what my local Volvo shop will do to mine tomorrow.

LOL, first update. The shop lost my replacement struts, hence new ones have been ordered, replacement scheduled for some time next week. Another early morning wasted.

As expected though, they knew nothing of a new strut-design, but they did inform me, that they already changed struts on several cars. According to them though, the replacment struts are not like the once in the German thread, but looks like the old ones (but new partnr.)

Whoop. Just hit send, and before I got to leave the shop, the mechanic told me, that a recall notice had just been issued, hence a formal acceptance of the problem. Also, he confirmed the new partnr.

If you happen to get some reference to the actual recall/TJ - please do share! Thanks!

I fixed mine with some duct tape for now- didn't feel like going to the dealer over this alone
