Sulphur contamination can turn oil black because traces of acid that form around the rings finish up in the oil where they react with the Calcium and Magnesium sulphate detergent and dispersant additives. That results in those detergents running out earlier in the oil change interval. Oddly enough it won't cause the oil to turn black until a good deposit of sludge has formed a few oil changes later if the engine is subject to too long an OCI or lots of time at idle.
