Default Soft rubbery paint on bumpers...argh

I’m very careful with my cars (you might not believe this reading on).

On two occasions I’ve very lightly ‘kissed’ a soft, smooth wooden fence post and wooden kerb edge in our parking area at home *rolleyes*

In both instances the paint has been rubbed/pushed back, peeling off in a small sheet, rather than a traditional light scuff. I would have fully expected, and have previously, been able to machine polish out marks from this kind of very, very light contact, but the Volvo paint, on the bumpers at least, seems to behave in a very particular way. The paint peelings feel rubbery (like plasti-dip).

The car was manufactured in late Nov 17, supplied mid Jan 18, so should be well cured now.

One mark is tiny, so I’d normally have had a go at flatting down the edge with 1000 wet and dry and carefully build it up and cut it back with a brush applied blended base and lacquer, but the edge peels back (revealing more black bumper substrate) and won’t sand ‘nicely’

Smart repair it is then

It is odd. Mine had a micra wipe its whole side in a car park on my arch and bumper in the first week of ownership. The Micra lost tons of paint and had massive dents in two doors. On mine most of it rubbed off with my hand right there and then. What’s left is light scuffs of under two square inches. No flaking or sheeting. I did have opticoat but that shouldn’t affect how paint adheres. Yours sounds like a paint without a primer.

Try the below company, I have used them on my wife’s mini for minor repairs.
They are pretty close to you being on the North side of town.

Please be aware of the ‘no repair’ zones on the front and rear bumpers on these cars where the radar is located - you cant paint over them.

Same for all the vehicles with the concealed radar.

Thanks - yes, good idea. I used them for a wheel scuff on my Touareg before I sold it back in Jan. They weren’t cheap (for a wheel scuff) but they did a very good job

Cheers

Wow. My dealer had no idea. They offered to have mine smart repaired by their usual guy. I am glad I declined.

Interesting thanks - worth flagging with any possible repairer then.

The rear bumper mark, which is minute, is probably in this zone, I can live with that without repairing and it probably comes under the fair wear and tear size rules, but the front one is too big to leave. That said its on the r design sticky-outy bumper ‘horn’ which looks to be free of painting restrictions.

That said, there could be a large dose or a4$e covering here, like the ‘don’t use extension leads with T8’. There are base\lacquer coats and there are COATS, from microns to millimetres! Easier just to say ‘no’ than get into explaining what does and doesn’t constitute acceptable
