That looks like a scratch from something abrasive. Do you have a sharp seam, or something on or in your trousers that could be causing this?

Nope, just normal trousers with nothing in the back pocket or anything that I can see that would cause that, same happened on the passenger seat and I do not sit in it. This is my fourth car with leather and never had any issues with the previous 3. I also sit in the leather seats in the lounge with the same clothes and no problems.

Most peculiar. I'll keep my eyes open for leather issues. My Land Cruiser's leather seats are as good as new after 19 years of me sliding in and out over the driver's seat and I'm no featherweight to say the least. Perhaps they are using some new eco-crap method of preparing leather these days?

The passenger side that has just been done actually feels like thicker leather than the original. The contour seats I have are no longer an option on the MY18.

Default Seats & Handles

I have a 2016 Inscription XC90 with Blonde Leather. The driver seat was replaced for the first time at 6 months old and I have just had both the front seats replaced again, free of charge by Volvo, however the leather door handles are now also worn £1700 to replace and despite the car still being under warranty Volvo are refusing to do anything, they say its fair wear and tear!

I've just have an eye-watering 2 year service (£485...) on my MY17 T8 Momentum and raised the issue of a worn seat similar to those in this thread. Only difference is mine are the standard leather faced Momentum seats, rather than the Nappa ones.

I will say, I told the Volvo service centre I wasn't too bothered about a replacement as it's a lease car going back in 12 months, but that I wanted to log the issue now (2 years and only 20K miles into the lease) in case someone tries to charge me for it after the final inspection when it goes back.

The tech insisted he raise it with Volvo anyway though, to have it replaced and I didn't argue. Worryingly though, when I went to pick it up later, he had an email printout in his hand where Volvo had denied replacing it under warranty. Presumably then it's 'my fault' or they consider this acceptable wear and tear.

Although, in fairness,....if I had insisted it was replaced, maybe I'd have had a different answer.

If this were my car of course it would be a different story. I certainly won't be paying for this, but thought I'd mention it for those that might have a similar issue.

The leather seats on my last 4 cars (BMW, VW, Audi and Honda), which were subject to much more use, all went back in good condition, so I'm fairly sure it's not my backside that's the issue here...

It's simply poor quality control where the leather has been bought on cost grounds rather than quality and suitability.
That Volvo won't acknowledge their error in judgement is sorrowful and passing on the blame to owners screams of an absence of customer care - premium-priced product with bargain basement respect for the customers.
Let future purchaser beware is the message Volvo are clearly putting out.
Well done Volvo!

Look, in fairness I did say to the tech I wasn't too bothered about a replacement, but if this affected their decision not to replace it (or rather replace it when it goes back), I'd rather they just said.

If they weren't aware of this and are just trying to get out of replacing it though, which my gut says is the case, I'd say that was pretty short sighted and potentially damaging to the brand. Audi and BMW interiors, on this showing, look bullet-proof in comparison and that might affect future buying/leasing decisions.

I must admit I do find the Volvo dealership I use a bit hard work to deal with. They struggle to look you in the eye, are quite evasive about issues normally and just deny they found a problem. They always seem to do "a modification/update/replacement anyway" though....

A simple: 'yeah, that wasn't quite right' would have done.

If I had treated the seats with reasonable care I would not be accepting this after only 2 years and average mileage. The 3 Mercedes I had with leather seats were still in good condition after many more miles than 20k. I have only just got rid of a leather settee after 16 years and much more use than my car seats as the leather has started to wear.
